A Message to Our Community
We, the members of the Seward Police Department, wish to thank the community for putting on a peaceful and lawful protest. As we all observe the aftermath of the George Floyd tragedy, we all want to see the situation come to a lawful and just conclusion. Not one officer in our department is comfortable with the way Mr. Floyd was treated and the use of force against him infuriates every one of us. Unfortunately, there will always be occasions that arise that will require police to use force but metering that force while still trying to protect life is paramount to our mission.
Sir Robert Peel said, “The police are the public and the public are the police.” Words which should be remembered at a time such as this, particularly by the police but also by the public. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of “us vs. them” mentality. This mentality divides and destroys and must not take hold in our community. We welcome our public to interact with us, challenge us or communicate with us at any time in respectful discourse.
The Seward Police Department has been and remains committed to the humane treatment of all people, no matter their race, creed, sex or religion. We know we are not perfect but we are always striving to improve ourselves. We are hopeful that positive changes can continue to be made that will assist us in providing quality service to the community.
Thank you very much Seward,
Your Police Department
