KCSO investigating shooting involving off-duty deputy

On June 7, 2020 at approximately 8:45 a.m., the Bakersfield Police Department was dispatched to a call for service in the 3600-block of Eisenhower Avenue. BPD learned that a residential burglary had occurred and the suspect had fled in a stolen vehicle.

The suspect was involved in a traffic collision in the 3400-block of Eisenhower Avenue and fled on foot onto Highway 99 north of White Lane. The suspect stopped an off-duty Kern County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, who was traveling northbound in his personal vehicle. The suspect entered the vehicle in an attempt to steal the vehicle.

During the carjacking, a physical struggle ensued and the deputy shot the suspect. The suspect, an adult Hispanic male, succumbed to his injuries on scene.

The series of events is being investigated by BPD and KCSO. The suspect’s identity is unknown at this time and the Coroner’s Office will release that information once notifications of kin has been made.

Due to the ongoing investigation, the deputy’s name is not being released at this time. The deputy sustained minor injuries as a result of the physical altercation inside the vehicle. The deputy has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
