On Monday, June 8th, at approximately 11:00 PM, the Morgan Hill Police Department responded to reports of a traffic collision on Monterey Rd south of Watsonville Rd. Officers quickly arrived at the scene to a solo vehicle traffic collision with the driver trapped inside. Police and Fire personnel worked feverishly to rescue the driver from the wreckage. Tragically, the unidentified driver, died at the scene. As a result of the collision, a small vegetation fire began and spread south on the east side of the roadway. Morgan Hill Fire Dept. was able to contain the fire as it neared several buildings. There were no reports of any structures damaged as a result of the fire.

Traffic investigators responded to the scene to conduct the fatal collision investigation. It was determined the involved vehicle was driving northbound on Monterey Rd at a high rate of speed. As the vehicle approached the intersection of Monterey Rd and Watsonville Rd, it traveled off the roadway and collided head-on with a large tree. Investigators interviewed witnesses at the scene and are trying to determine if alcohol is a suspected factor in the collision. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office responded to the collision and will determine the identity of the driver. The driver’s identity will not be released until the family is notified.
