Current Initiatives and Updates
- New Health Order Moves County into Stage 3 of Recovery - Effective today, the L.A. County Department of Public Health (DPH) has issued a revised Public Health Order that moves the County into Stage 3 of the Roadmap to Recovery. DPH provided re-opening guidelines for the following sectors: gyms and fitness facilities, spectator free professional sports, day camps, museums, galleries, zoos, and aquariums, campgrounds, and R.V. parks, and music, film, and television production. The County also updated its guidelines for the beach, allowing chairs, canopies, and coolers. Summer beach and surf camps are permitted in alignment with day camp safeguards. Gatherings of any size and athletic competitions, sports, and beach volleyball remain prohibited.
- Pier Re-Opens on Monday - In response to the revised County Order, the City of Manhattan Beach is now permitted to re-open the Manhattan Beach Pier with social distance and face covering restrictions. The City plans to re-open the pier on Monday, June 15, to allow for required signage to be installed and cleaning to take place beforehand.
- Recreation Activities are Back - Manhattan Beach REC Summer Camp is ready for campers to enjoy outdoor activities, arts, crafts, and games in a fun and safe environment. Camp begins June 15 at Manhattan Heights Park, and June 22 at Live Oak Park with a modified schedule, reduced capacity, and strict protocols in compliance with State and L.A. County Public Health guidelines. Additional camps and aquatics programs will be available on July 6. - Begg Pool Re-Opens on June 22 - Begg Pool will re-open for recreation, lap, and Masters swim on June 22. Users will be required to reserve in advance and can begin making reservations on June 15 (7 days prior to re-opening).
- Citywide Street Sweeping Resumes Monday, June 15 –The City will resume citywide street sweeping of public streets beginning Monday, June 15. To allow residents' time to adjust to the resumption of service, a two-week grace period will be provided before street sweeping parking restrictions will be enforced. Tickets for parking violations will be issued beginning Monday, June 29. Residents should comply with the posted parking signs.

- New Tool Predicts Decay of Airborne Coronavirus - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) added a new calculator to their online tools. The tool estimates the natural decay of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) in the air under various environmental conditions. The groundbreaking Airborne Decay Calculator Tool will assist efforts to minimize person-to-person transmission and analyze environmental factors to help stop the spread of COVID-19. - L.A. Metro Funds Small Business Relief – The Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA), with funding from L.A. Metro, created a program to provide emergency relief to help small businesses during this unprecedented time. A new loan program assists small businesses located near a major transit stop. - Free FTC Webinar on Coronavirus Scams - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is hosting an online webinar titled "Avoiding Coronavirus Scams." FTC discusses Coronavirus scams (related to both the virus and its financial implications), the common tactics used in many scams, and some FTC resources to help avoid problems. If you know the red flags of fraud, you can help steer clear of con artists. The webinar takes place Tuesday, June 16, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, Register online. - IRS Guidance on Donations that Aid Victims of COVID-19 – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released guidance on employer leave-based donation programs that aid victims of COVID-19. Notice 2020-46 dictates that cash payments employers make to charitable organizations that provide relief to victims of COVID-19 in exchange for sick, vacation, or personal leave, which employees forgo, will not be treated as compensation. Employers may deduct the payment as a charitable contribution. Visit irs.gov for more information.
- L.A. County Recovers – Economic Development Strategy – LACDA has released a draft of its Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for Los Angeles County for community review and feedback. The strategy outlined is derived from locally-based, regionally-driven planning sessions with representatives from private business, higher education, labor, education, government, and community-based organizations. Comments will be accepted online through 5:00 PM on July 3. Visit lacda.org for more information.
- L.A. County Daily Briefing Statistics on COVID-19 – L.A. County Department of Public Health has confirmed 20 new deaths and 1,633 new cases of COVID-19 in today's daily briefing. There are a total of 2,832 deaths; ninety-three percent of people who died had underlying health conditions. Testing capacity continues to increase in L.A. County, with testing results available for over 761,000 individuals and 8% of people testing positive. 7,250 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have been hospitalized (11% of positive cases) at some point during their illness. The City of Manhattan Beach has proclaimed a Local State of Emergency (PDF) regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Staff continues to monitor and speak with the health experts at Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH), California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Their health expertise and guidance are critical to the City’s planning and response to the coronavirus.
