NARRATIVE:
Los Angeles County Homicide Detectives are continuing their investigation into a Deputy-Involved-Shooting that occurred at 20th Street East and Palmdale Blvd on Friday, June 12, 2020 at approximately 9:19 PM.
Detectives have learned that the three suspects who were involved in this incident committed an armed carjacking in the City of South Gate earlier in the day. The vehicle that was stolen had tracking software. The tracking company contacted the California Highway Patrol who located the vehicle on the 14 Freeway North of the 5 Freeway. The California Highway Patrol Officers followed the vehicle into the Agua Dulce area and requested the assistance of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station. A pursuit was initiated by the California Highway Patrol which continued along the 14 Freeway at high rates of speed. Upon exiting Palmdale Blvd the pursuit continued East bound until reaching 20th Street East. All three suspects exited their vehicle armed. One of the suspects armed with a shotgun immediately surrendered. The other two suspects, armed with Handguns engaged both Deputies and Highway Patrol Officers, firing multiple rounds at them. At that time an Officer involved Shooting occurred during which one of the suspects was struck several times. The suspect was taken to an area hospital and is being treated for his injuries. The third suspect surrendered without being injured.
No Deputies or California Highway Patrol Officers were injured.
A shotgun and two handguns were recovered at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information at this time.
Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted. Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
