Please lock your vehicles and remove valuables to prevent burglaries and thefts.
The Moraga Police are investigating a number of auto burglaries and thefts from unlocked autos that have occurred in the past few days. Most of these are crimes of opportunity that can be easily prevented. It appears that suspects are walking through neighborhoods and trying car doors to ascertain if they are locked. Once they find an unlocked vehicle, they ransack the vehicle and take valuables. If a garage door opener is in the car, they may open the garage and steal things from the garage and unlocked vehicles in the garage -- this has occurred this week in Moraga.
These crimes can be prevented by doing a few things. First, always lock your vehicle, even if it is in front of your home or in your garage. It goes without saying that we should all lock our garages and homes. Second, don't leave valuables inside your vehicle and secure your garage door openers. Third, report suspicious persons in your neighborhood by calling Moraga Police Dispatch at 925-284-5010. Please be prepared to describe to the dispatcher what the person looks like and what they are doing that is suspicious
Additionally, we have also received reports of mail theft from mailboxes. Consider purchasing and installing a locking mailbox. These have a slot for mail to be inserted by the postal carrier, but the mail can only be removed if the box is opened with a key. They are not foolproof, but they do reduce crimes of opportunity.
Please contact the Moraga Police with any questions or concerns at 925-888-7055. Report crimes or suspicious persons to Dispatch at 925-284-5010. For Emergencies, call 9-1-1.
Thank you for your help in keeping Moraga a safe community.
