Crime Alert Bulletin for the week of June 8-14, 2020

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 06-09-20 at 11:59 p.m., Officer Shoopman was on patrol in the area of San Pedro Road and Mission Street and saw a subject carrying a backpack who was walking across the street from the Walgreen’s store. Officer Shoopman heard an audible alarm coming from the Walgreen’s and saw an open right front sliding glass door. Officer Shoopman contacted the subject he saw walking and notified the dispatchers that he was with a him at the Walgreen’s where the alarm was sounding. The Walgreen’s store manager arrived at the store, turned off the alarm and led the officer back to the manager’s office to review video footage. After reviewing the footage showing that the subject and another subject stole items, Officer Shoopman arrested the subject, a 34-year old Vallejo resident, for burglary. Other officers searched the surrounding area for the other subject, but he is still outstanding.

On Thursday, 06-11-20 at 11:38 a.m., Officer Tualaulelei was dispatched to an apartment on the 100 block of Park Plaza Drive on the report of a past family disturbance regarding a father and son who was possibly using marijuana. The father requested us to speak with his 16-year old son. The son admitted to being in a verbal argument with his father over lighters and said it was not physical. Officer Tualaulelei asked the son if he used drugs, and the son said no. The subject was on probation, and one of the terms of his probation was that he was not to be in possession of alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, controlled substances or cigarettes. The officer asked the subject where his room was, and he told the subject he would be searching his room because he was on probation. Officer Tualaulelei found a glass jar containing pills, seven packages of marijuana cookies and marijuana joints inside the subject’s backpack on his bed. At that time, the subject broke down crying and apologized to his mother. Because of COVID-19, the subject was not booked into juvenile hall, but a complaint will be sought against the suspect for possession of a narcotic controlled substance, possession of marijuana greater than 28.5 grams, failing to obey a juvenile court order, and for committing an adult offense as a juvenile.

Scams/Other

“Bailout” Telephone Scam

On Thursday, 06-11-20 at 11:00 a.m., a 77-year old Daly City resident received a telephone call from a man identifying himself as “Mr. Fisher”, who said he was a defense attorney. “Mr. Fisher” told the reporting party/victim that his son had been arrested with her son. The caller told the victim that both sons were inside of an Uber ride share vehicle when a police officer stopped the driver for speeding. “Mr. Fisher” told the victim that the officer noticed there was a “handgun” and “drugs” in the rear floorboard of the area. “Mr. Fisher” told the victim that both sons were arrested in San Ramon, which is where the victim’s son works. “Mr. Fisher” told the victim that if she would like her son to be bailed out, she would have to provide a $24,000 wire transfer to a bank account. A male subject got on the phone and identified himself as the son and said he needed his mother to wire transfer the money immediately and to not tell his father or his wife. “Mr. Fisher” got back on the line and provided the victim with information of where to transfer the wire. The victim went to her bank an hour later, transferred the money to the account and called “Mr. Fisher” to inform him the transfer was complete. The following day, the victim received another call from “Mr. Fisher” who said the police found a second firearm and more narcotics, and she needed to post a second bond for $15,000. The victim went back to her bank and completed another transfer. That evening, the victim’s son called his parents to check on them, and the victim asked her son if he received the bail money. The son informed his mother he had not been arrested and that she was the victim of a scam.

This scam is unlike typical scams where callers ask for payment in gift cards. Please relay this story to your friends and family. These callers are so convincing. This is a big loss for the victim.

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
