Current Initiatives and Updates

  • Signage in the City – In the coming weeks, staff will place street banners and permenant metal signs reminding the community of requirements to wear face coverings around others and maintaining social distance. In addition, signage in parks will be cycled through to ensure multiple messages related to COVID-19 are conveyed.
  • Reduce Your Risk of COVID-19 - Avoid the Three C's 1) Confined Spaces - especially with poor ventilation. Outdoors is better than indoors. 2) Crowds – the more people, the higher the risk.  3) Close Contact – staying further apart is safer than being close together.  The more C's, the higher the risk!
  • City Council to Discuss Budget and Additional COVID-19 Measures, Thursday, June 18, 11:00 AM – View the agenda and attachments on the City's website. In the interest of maintaining appropriate social distancing, the City Council encourages the public to participate by using one of the options to submit public comments found on the City's website.

  • CDC COVID-19 Travel Guidelines by Country – The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an interactive Travel Recommendations by Country webpage, that displays geographic risk assessment for COVID-19 transmission levels. Earlier this week, CDC published the list of countries where travelers, with specific exceptions, are prohibited from entry to the United States in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.   • Focus on Educational Equity in Recovery and Beyond – The Greater L.A. Education Foundation is hosting a webinar titled “Keeping a Focus on Educational Equity in Phase 2 of Recovery and Beyond” on Thursday, June 18 at 2:00 PM. As organizations and schools across the U.S. are forced to make a myriad of decisions among the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, how can educational leaders hold equity as a critical component of decision making while also making it a priority?   • Relief for Smaill Business and Non-Profits - The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) reopened the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) and EIDL Advance Program portal for eligible small business and non-profit applicants experiencing economic impacts due to COVID-19.  For more information, visit sba.gov.
  • IRS Outlines Changes to Health Care Spending Under CARES Act -  The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced new rules under the CARES Act provides flexibility for health care spending. The new rules provide relief in the current environment where people need at-home services due to measures to fight COVID-19. Visit irs.gov for more information.
  • FHA Extends Moratorium for Homeowners -  Federal Housing Administration (FHA) announced a two-month extension of its foreclosure and eviction moratorium through August 31, 2020, for homeowners with FHA-insured Single Family mortgages. This extension provides additional security and peace of mind to homeowners that they will not lose their homes while they are trying to recover financially. Visit hud.gov for more information.
  • COVID-19 Updated Master Question List - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) updated the COVID-19 Master Question List (MQL). The MLQ quickly summarizes what is known, what additional information is needed, and who may be working to address fundamental questions such as, “What is the infectious dose?” and “How long does the virus persist in the environment?” The MQL presents the current state of available information to government decision makers in the operational response to COVID-19 and prevents duplication of efforts by coordinating research.  Visit dhs.gov to view the report.
  • Research to Impact Response to COVID-19 - S&T National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) published a new study in the Journal of Infectious Diseases “Airborne SARS-CoV-2 is Rapidly Inactivating by Simulated Sunlight”. This research provides the first evidence that sunlight may rapidly inactivate SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces and help shape the operational response to COVID-19. For more information visit dhs.gov.
  • L.A. County Daily Briefing Statistics on COVID-19 – L.A. County Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed 34 new deaths and 2,129 new cases of COVID-19 in today's daily briefing. This is the highest number of new cases reported in a day, however about 600 cases are from a backlog of test results. There are a total of 2,991 deaths; ninety-three percent of people who died had underlying health conditions. Testing capacity continues to increase in L.A. The City of Manhattan Beach has proclaimed a Local State of Emergency (PDF) regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Staff continues to monitor and speak with the health experts at Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH), California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Their health expertise and guidance are critical to the City’s planning and response to the coronavirus.
