Increase in Catalytic Converter Thefts
There has been a significant increase in catalytic converter thefts throughout the entire state. In the last two months the Mill Valley Police Department has had six reported cases with dozens more throughout the county. Thieves are targeting Toyota Prius and other Toyota vehicles primarily, however, other types of vehicles have been victimized. The catalytic converter is a component of the vehicle’s exhaust and inside are precious metals that can be sold or recycled. The replacement of a catalytic converter is very expensive and can cost several thousand dollars.
Catalytic Converters are usually removed with a reciprocating-type saw or grinder. Thieves access catalytic converters from underneath your vehicle, so you cannot protect them by locking your vehicle. You can deter or prevent catalytic converter thefts by parking in well-lit or motion detector lit areas, a locked garage, or other secured locations. If you believe a theft of a catalytic converter is in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately.
The Mill Valley Police Department is working hard to protect your vehicles from theft. We rely heavily on help from our community members to report suspicious activity. Please report any suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1 or any non-emergency tips to 415-389-4100, thank you.
