County to Assess Further Reopenings Amid Rising COVID Cases
The timeline to further reopen businesses closed due to the coronavirus pandemic may be slowed, due to a rise in reported cases. Contra Costa Heath Services announced today that they are evaluating whether the county should continue in its current timeline after data showed an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the county.
According to the county, the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals in the county has increased by 42% in the past seven days. The average number of newly identified COVID cases has increased from 39-68 per day and the rate of positive test results has also increased.
The data indicates that of those testing positive, more cases are being found in young people. In June, 55% of cases were in those 40 years old and younger.
Contra Costa Health Services is encouraging all residents to get tested and are reminding residents that wearing a facial covering is required when inside businesses, waiting in line at restaurants, or when outside and unable to maintain social distancing.
As a result, the county will evaluate the potential risk in maintaining the current timeline to reopening, which would have included the resumption of indoor dining, gyms, bars, nail salons, and others on July 1, 2020.
With the 4th of July weekend coming up next week, residents are asked to avoid large social gatherings, maintain proper social distancing, and continue to mask and follow good hygiene to prevent further transmission of the virus.
