Deputies arrested Alex Portillo, an arson registrant, for igniting a brush fire near a Highland shopping center

LOCATION: Highland Ave. / Victoria Ave., Highland
SUSPECT: Alex Portillo, 27 years old, transient
SUMMARY:
On Friday, June 26, 2020, at approximately 7:00 am, deputies responded to Food 4 Less on Highland Ave. for a male transient who started a brush fire near the business. The reporting party gave a description of the suspect and an area check was conducted. Deputies located the male matching the description walking in the Food 4 Less parking lot. Deputies contacted the suspect and he fled on foot through the parking lot. Deputies were able to capture the suspect and take him into custody without further incident. The scene of the fire was located near by and had stopped burning. The suspect was identified as Alex Portillo who is a transient who lives in the nearby wash.
Portillo currently has a felony no-bail warrant for Arson and is an Arson registrant. Portillo was arrested for PC-451(d)-Arson and booked into the Central Detention Center.
