Alert

Flood Warning until 09:30PM Tuesday

* At 632 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicates that rainfall has diminished across the region. However emergency management from both Smyth and Tazewell counties report that flooding of low-lying and poor drainage areas along with a few roads continues as a result of excessive rainfall that fell earlier this afternoon on already saturated ground and soils. Note, this Flood Warning replaces Flood Warning Number 62 that expired at 630 PM EDT for much of the same area, including Smyth and Tazewell counties. This Flood Warning also replaces Flash Flood Warning Number 38 that was in effect for Tazewell County until 730 PM edt, but was cancelled at 630 PM EDT as conditions are no longer indicative of flash flooding. This new Flood Warning remains in effect until 930 PM EDT.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include... Marion... Richlands... Tazewell... Saltville... Chilhowie... Cedar Bluff... and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. This includes the following streams and drainages... Bluestone River, Little Laurel Creek, Deskin Creek, Dickey Creek and Jerry Creek.

* AFFECTED AREAS: TAZEWELL, VA ... SMYTH, VA

Instructions:

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately. When it is safe to do so, please send your reports of flooding, including mudslides or flooded roads, to the National Weather Service by calling toll free at 1...8 6 6...2 1 5...4 3 2 4. Reports and pictures can also be shared on the National Weather Service Blacksburg Facebook page and on Twitter.
