Important Message From Mayor Brad Cohen Regarding Use of Fireworks
Although fireworks continue to be a much-beloved tradition on the 4th of July in America, they can be dangerous and illegal. Over the past several days, there has been an increase in the number of complaints regarding the use of fireworks throughout the Township of East Brunswick. These are typically loud illegal fireworks that have disturbed residents at all hours of the day and night.
The East Brunswick Police Department will be taking a “Zero Tolerance” approach to fireworks violations. Increased neighborhood patrols will be strictly enforcing any violations of illegal possession and/or use of fireworks including any violation of local ordinances. Additionally, any person and/or business found to be selling illegal fireworks will be charged accordingly.
Recent changes have allowed for the use and possession of certain consumer fireworks in New Jersey. The sale, possession, and use of illegal fireworks (including firecrackers, roman candles, M80’s, cherry bombs, salutes, and ground-to-air fireworks) is a fourth-degree and is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 and/or up-to 18 months in jail.
Please DO NOT assume fireworks sold in your local stores are legal!
To help ensure everyone has a safe and happy holiday, we have attached a flyer detailing which fireworks are deemed legal and illegal in New Jersey.
Any complaints can be reported to the East Brunswick Police Department via the non-emergency number, 732-390-6901.
Remember to be considerate of your neighbors and act responsibly when using legal fireworks.
Have a happy and safe Fourth of July!
