Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit - 2020 Fourth of July Marine Enforcement Operation

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit conducted it's 2020 Fourth of July Marine Enforcement Operation starting on July 3rd through July 5th. The operation was conducted along the Colorado River from the California/Nevada state line to the Riverside County line as well as Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead.

Most of the operation was focused on the waterways with resorts, launch ramps and marinas along the river and lakes. A total of ten patrol vessels, an OHV team, the Sheriff's Dive Team and two Sheriff's Department helicopters were deployed throughout the area. The Marine Enforcement unit conducted a total of one hundred sixty-three enforcement stops throughout the holiday weekend. There was a total of 18 arrests made for Boating Under the Influence. The following are the names of the individuals arrested during the operation:

David Marler, 24 years of age from San Clemente
Thomas Phelps, 36 years of age from Hesperia
Michael Harding, 45 years of age from Lake Elsinore
Riley Hale, 23 years of age from Las Vegas
Arnold Jimenez, 18 years of age from Desert Hot Springs
Parker Smith, 27 years of age from Las Vegas
Steven Zumwalt, 32 years of age from Lake Havasu City, AZ.
Karina Green, 31 years of age from Whittier
Gary Smith, 34 years of age from Las Vegas
Selina Rubio, 43 years of age from Fontana
Jesse Torres, 26 years of age from Fontana
Brittney Blackmon, 30 years of age from San Diego
Garrett Smith, 33 years of age from Rialto
Samuel Montoya, 38 years of age from Albuquerque, NM
Shannon Hoffman, 39 years of age from Lancaster
William Andrews, 24 years of age from Santa Rosa
Chaz Klein, 29 years of age from Orange
Dusty Turpin, 23 years of age form Lake Havasu City, AZ

Approximately 40 citations were issued for various boating law violations as well as 120 verbal warnings. The Marine Enforcement Unit investigated a non-injury boat accident on the Parker Strip and an injury boat accident on Big Bear Lake where a fishing boat capsized, and a 60-year-old male subject was underwater for approximately 10 minutes. The victim was flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and is in intensive care but stable condition.

The Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit urges all California residents to go online to californiaboatercard.com and take the online test to obtain their boater card which is now required by law. The Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit is, as always, dedicated to providing a safe boating atmosphere for the public and reminds everyone to wear their life vests and to boat sober.
