SMPD has received several reports of animals within the city acting erratically. The bizarre behavior included running in circles, aggression, and disorientation. The animals affected were a stray cat and two squirrels. One of these animals had to be put down on scene by one of our officers. These have occurred within the last week of one another.

We suspect possible animal distemper, a disease with similar symptoms to rabies. We wanted to make the public aware so that you can monitor your own household pets for signs of distemper, such as fever, lethargy, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea. Especially be mindful if your pets are outdoors and have interactions with any feral animals. When in doubt, contact a veterinarian.
