License Plate Recognition Camera Hit On A Stolen Vehicle Results In An Arrest

On Sunday, July 12, 2020, at approximately 9:42 PM, the Sausalito Police Department received an alert from our License Plate Recognition Cameras of a stolen 2010 Honda Civic entering Sausalito from the 4000 block of Bridgeway. The Honda had been stolen out of Sausalito on Friday, July 10, 2020.

Sausalito Police Officers immediately responded and conducted a comprehensive search of the area. Officer James Fotherby located the Honda at approximately 9:44 PM and affected a traffic stop in the 1900 block of Bridgeway. Officers removed and detained the driver, David Jenkins (52-year-old resident of Chico) and an adult passenger without incident. Further investigation led to Jenkins being arrested and booked into the Marin County Jail for vehicle theft and possession of the stolen vehicle. The passenger was released from the scene without charges.

Since the City of Sausalito’s License Plate Recognition Camera program became operational on Thursday, May 18, 2017, thirty-five (35) stolen vehicles have been recovered and forty-one (41) individuals have been arrested for various crimes. The goal of the License Plate Recognition Camera program is to increase public safety by utilizing technology to alert Law Enforcement to wanted vehicles, enhance post-crime investigative abilities, and deter crime by increasing the likelihood of suspect identification.
