Excessive Heat Warning until 09:00PM Sunday

...Dangerously hot and humid conditions through the weekend... Dangerously hot and humid conditions will start spreading across eastern Kansas and Missouri Friday. The worst of the heat and humidity will likely peak Saturday afternoon, with oppressive conditions persisting into Sunday. Concerns are highest for the core Kansas City Metro areas, as the heat island effect will make it particularly brutal in the large urban center. There might be some relief form the sultry conditions by Monday with on-again- off-again storm chances returning to the region as the storm track adjusts across the Central Plains.

* WHAT...Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 109 expected.

* WHERE...In Kansas, Wyandotte and Johnson KS Counties. In Missouri, Platte, Clay and Jackson Counties.

* WHEN...From noon Friday to 9 PM CDT Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Check on family, friends, neighbors, and pets frequently as heat related illnesses can develop very quickly; particularly in children and the elderly. And, under no circumstance leave children or animals unattended in vehicles.

* AFFECTED AREAS: WYANDOTTE ... CLAY ... JACKSON ... JOHNSON ... PLATTE

Instructions:

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
