Catalytic converter thefts have been on a rise throughout California and during the last two months we have had six (6) cases in Sausalito alone. Thieves have been primarily targeting the Toyota Prius. However, other types of vehicles can be victimized.

The catalytic converter is a component of the vehicle’s exhaust system and looks similar to a small muffler. Inside the catalytic converter are precious metals that can be sold or recycled. Thieves access the catalytic converter from underneath the vehicle and usually remove them using a reciprocating-type saw. The cost to replace a catalytic converter is approximately $3,000.

You can help deter or prevent catalytic converter thefts by parking in well-lit areas and reporting criminal and suspicious activity to the Sausalito Police Department. If you believe a theft of a catalytic converter or a burglary of a vehicle is in progress call 9-1-1 immediately. If you observe suspicious activity, please call (415) 289-4170 as soon as possible.
