06/01/2020 *Civil Dispute
700 E Shore – Officers were called regarding subjects damaging onsite property. The investigation did not reveal any damage had occurred, but rather an internal conflict was an issue. Officers mediated the immediate situation and advised the reporting party that the incident was a civil case.

06/03/2020 *Malicious Destruction or Property
7 Mile Rd – The victim reported that on two separate occasions an unknown subject(s) had pulled down the pride flag in front of the residence. On a third occasion a derogatory comment was yelled from a passing vehicle. The case remains under investigation.

06/04/2020 *Identity Theft
500 Block of Amethyst – A victim reported that she was contacted by an unfamiliar phone company claiming she had an outstanding bill with them. The victim stated that someone used her personal information to open an account. The case remains under investigation.

06/04/2020 *Threats Complaint
– A complainant reported receiving threatening messages from an ex-boyfriend & father of her children. Officers mediated the situation, contacting the subject and advising the victim to request a Personal Protective Order – After the documentation of the incident, the complainant did not wish to pursue charges.

06/07/2020 *Suspicious Situation – Offensive Banner
A citizen turned over an offensive sign that he had removed from a backstop of a baseball diamond at the athletic park. The sign was painted on a canvas drop cloth depicting negative associations with the police (a painted pig). The sign had been placed on the backstop and could be observed by those driving on n/b US 23.

06/08/2020 *Identity Theft –Unemployment Fraud
7700 Block of Earhart – A complainant reported that he received a verification letter from the Michigan Unemployment Agency. The complainant believes someone used his identity to file an unemployment claim. At the time of the report, the complainant had no monetary losses.

06/09/2020 *Larceny (theft) of Bicycles
9400 Block of Main St – Two victims reported that on June 6, they left their bicycles unattended and sometime between 3pm – 4:45pm both bikes were taken from the property. The bikes were recovered that evening and the investigation revealed that there was no criminal intent to steal the bikes.

06/10/2020 Identity Theft – Unemployment Fraud
2200 E Joy Rd – A complainant reported that she received information from her employer that someone had filed for unemployment benefits using her identity. No additional monetary losses have been determined.

06/11/2020 Identity Theft – Unemployment Fraud
300 Block of East Shore - – A complainant reported that he received a letter from the Michigan Unemployment Agency regarding his recent unemployment benefit request. The complainant believes someone used his identity to file an unemployment claim. At the time of the report, the complainant had no monetary losses.

06/12/2020 Larceny from Boat
East Shore- A complainant reported that someone was seen removing items from a boat. The investigation revealed the subject involved and further revealed that the case was a civil dispute over the ownership of the boat. All parties were identified, the property in question identified and the case documented awaiting the civil court proceedings.

06/13/2020 Larceny of a License Plate
East Shore – An officer on patrol observed a vehicle parked without a plate registration. While investigating, the Officer was approached by the owner of the vehicle who was surprised his vehicle had no license plate. The owner stated that sometime between June 12 in the morning and June 13, 1130 AM someone must have stolen his license plate.

06/14/2020 Dog Bite
Turquoise Circle – A dog broke free from its residence upon observing another dog walking by. The escaped dog bit the dog being walked by its’ owner and when the owner attempted to stop the attack, the owner was also bitten. Officers removed the dog, placing it in quarantine at the Human Society. Both the victim’s dog and the vicitm were transported to medical facilities.

06/14/2020 Fraud
300 block of Grove - A victim reported that they received what appeared to be a legitimate $5,000.00 Wells Fargo check, which the victim believed was payment for on-line surveys. After depositing the check and sending $4000.00 in gift cards to a post office in Houston, TX; the victim was notified by his bank that the check did not clear.

Legitimate companies do not send over payments and request the receiver to return some of the money.

06/15/2020 Identity Theft / Fraud
Wildwood – A victim reported that possibly a known subject used her personal information to open a credit card and to rent a vehicle. The case remains under investigation.

06/16/2020 Assist with a Residential Fire
2500 Block of E. Northfield Church – Officers and Fire Fighters responded to a residential fire. A smoke detector alerted the homeowner and the occupants were able to get out of their home safely. The case remains under investigation.

06/24/2020 *Attempt Extortion
Margaret – A complainant reported that on 2 different occasions and through 2 different means, he received messages from an unknown source, attempting to extort money. The messages referenced revealing photos and information about the complainant unless the complainant sent money. The complainant did not comply with the demands, filed a police report and was advised by officers to block and cease all communication.

06/24/2020 *Fraud / Identity Theft
6200 Block of Hellner – A victim reported that when reviewing his bank statement, he observed a cashed check which the complainant had not written. In addition, checks that should have been cashed had not been and the complainant’s visa card was denied use. The victim recalls mailing his bills, paid with checks at a post office, but the checks had yet to be cashed. The victim was provided an Identity Theft pamphlet, information on the FTC website and advised to monitor his accounts. A possible suspect is being developed and the Northfield Twp Police is working with the Postal Inspector regarding this incident.

06/25/2020 *Detained-Driving on a Suspended License
East Shore & 7 Mile Rd- An officer on patrol observed a vehicle speeding. Upon stop of the vehicle, the 41 year old male advised the car was not his and he did not have a license. After confirming that the drivers’ license was suspended, officers impounded the vehicle and due to the coronavirus, the subject was released. The case has been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for review.

06/27/2020 *Detained – Driving on a Suspended License
U.S. 23 and Barker – Officer on patrol observed a vehicle traveling at a very high rate of speed. Upon stop of the vehicle, the 42 year old driver stated he did not have a valid driver’s license and had several warrants for his arrest. The driver’s vehicle was impounded and his plate confiscated. Due to the Coronavirus, the subject was released at the scene and a charges submitted to the prosecutor’s office.

06/29/2020 Property Damage
7300 Block of Nollar – A homeowner reported that on Monday June 29 between 12 am & 7 am, his wooden gate was broken off its’ hinges. If anyone has information regarding this incident they are asked to contact the Northfield Twp Police.

Don’t Fall Prey to New Coronavirus Scams

Per the Federal Trade Commission – Fraudulent representatives claiming to be from utility companies are convincing victim’s that their utilities would be shut down if payment was not immediately made. Utility companies don’t demand banking information by email or phone.
• Should you receive a call and are uncertain of the legitimacy – contact your utility company through the number on your bill or their website. Do not ask for a number from the caller.
• Never give out banking information over the phone, unless you placed the call and know it is legitimate
• Never pay by gift card, cash reload cards, cryptocurrency or by wiring money.

Scammers have even involved the FTC.

The FTC will NEVER email you for your bank account information, Social Security number or your credit card number.
• Do not open scam emails that claim to be from the “Global Empowerment Fund”
