Pickleball Information
Pickleball, Pickleball, Pickleball!!!!!!!!!
What is it and what’s the hubbub all about concerning Pickleball??
A definition from our friends at Wikipedia – “Pickleball is a paddle sport (similar to a racquet sport) that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis.[2] Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a Wiffle Ball, over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis, with several modifications.”
Ok, now we know what it is, but why is it so popular?
Here are some reasons for its popularity:
- People of all ages can play the sport.
- Pickleball is played on a smaller court, so players don’t have to move around as much which is why many older people like to play it.
- Many retirement aged adults like to play it because they can get their exercise in a fun way without having to play on a big court like tennis.
- Many teens and young adults find Pickleball very fun because you are able to have an intense game on a small court which means that you can use your hand eye coordination, much like you would if you were playing ping pong.
- Pickleball is also a way that many people are able to be social.
- Easy to Pick Up, Pickleball it is a lot easier to get the swing and service down because of the paddles and smaller court.
- It is Affordable, The final reason why Pickleball has become so popular is because it is very affordable. A basic set of paddles that come with a Wiffle ball can cost 25–35 dollars.
Pickleball is the “Fastest Growing Sport in America” and we have 6 Brand-New Courts at Community Park and 2 hybrid Pickleball/Tennis Courts at Lenape Park to try and meet the demand. On Wednesday evenings there is a “club” that gathers at Community Park and plays, as well as a group that plays on Saturday and Sunday mornings at Community Park. They are open to the public and you are welcome to Drop In and join them.
A Facebook group is also available for updated information – they are NOT affiliated with Recreation so you need to reach out to them on your own.
