(ORIGINAL) Tsunmai advisory issued for Prince William Sound communities following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake 75 miles south of Chignik, Alaska.
City emergency response personnel are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as we learn more.
Note: Valdez is currently under a tsunami ADVISORY only.
However, other areas of the state are under a tsunami warning.
What is a tsunami advisory?
A tsunami advisory is issued when a tsunami with the potential to generate strong currents or waves dangerous to those in or very near the water may occur. The threat may continue for several hours after initial arrival, but significant inundation is not expected.
