Sir Francis Drake Statue at Larkspur Landing
Early this morning, at the direction of City Manager Dan Schwarz, the City of Larkspur temporarily removed the Sir Francis Drake statue in Larkspur Landing. The removal is in response to planned demonstrations to tear down or demolish the statue this Thursday in a way that is potentially unsafe. Removing the statue is intended to promote public safety while preserving the statue so that dialogue about its future can continue.
On June 29, 2020, the City Council held a public workshop on the Sir Francis Drake statue. After hearing many perspectives from 40 members of the community, the Council directed the City Manager to research the logistical and regulatory process for the removal of the large statue from the bayside area, as well as schedule a second meeting to receive additional public feedback before making a final decision regarding the statue’s future. The June 29, 2020 meeting can be viewed at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWfP1OwyEmw
At the August 5, 2020 regular meeting of the City Council, staff will brief the Council and public about the removal of the statute and potential next steps. The City welcomes interested members of the community to join as at this meeting and offer perspectives and insights. An agenda will be published at www.cityoflarkspur.org/agendas prior to the meeting.
