INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision/Murder Investigation
LOCATION: Grand and Valley, Colton
VICTIM(S): Ruben Colunga, age 50, a resident of Colton (deceased)
Gary Martinez, age 56, a resident of Colton
SUSPECT: Roberto Ponciano, age 29 a resident of Rialto
SUMMARY:
On Saturday, July 25, 2020, at approximately 12:06 a.m., deputies from the Central Station, Officers from the California Highway Patrol and, Colton Police Department responded to the area of Grand and Valley following the report of a traffic collision with two victims in the roadway. The two victims were located with injuries and transported to a local area hospital. At approximately 4:09 a.m., Ruben Colunga succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Martinez was hospitalized due to his injuries.
Detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division - Homicide Detail and a deputy from the Major Accident Investigation Team were requested and responded to the location to conduct the investigation. After the investigation, a warrant for Roberto Ponciano was obtained, and deputies from the Specialized Enforcement Division were asked to assist in locating the suspect.
On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, deputies from the Specialized Enforcement Division located and arrested Roberto Ponciano. He was transported and booked into the West Valley Detention for PC187 Murder. Ponciano is being held without bail and is scheduled for court on July 30, 2020.
