Covering or removal of signage at Sir Francis Drake High School
Earlier today, Wednesday, July 29th, the Tamalpais Union High School District (TUHSD) and the Sir Francis Drake High School Administration began the work to remove and/or cover the school’s name and symbols while the process to change the school’s name moves forward. This activity was observed by many in our community and has resulted in the police department receiving numerous calls reporting vandalism at the school. We want to reassure you that these are not criminal acts and that the work is authorized and being carried out by the school and the District.
This is an excerpt from a statement issued today by Drake’s Principal and the TUHSD about their decision to remove or cover the name and symbols at the school. “…. While we engage in the process of renaming the school, we believe that it is important to remove or cover the harmful symbols associated with the current school name. To that, we have begun removing/covering the name “Drake” and symbols on campus. We know not all community members agree with the decision to change the name or the symbols associated therein, and those community members will be provided an opportunity to engage in our process. It is our hope that all sides can be heard and we can move forward with a new name that is unifying and inclusive...”
