Tropical Storm Isaias Update #3: Sidney Lanier Bridge Closure
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is closing the Sidney Lanier Bridge on SR 25 in Brunswick-Glynn County at 6 a.m. Monday, August 3 due to anticipated gale-force winds from Tropical Storm Isaias.
The closure will remain in place until further notice, when extensive inspections of the bridge by GDOT deem it safe to reopen. Residents, business owners and their employees, and JIA staff should plan to take alternate routes to Jekyll Island. Use caution while driving and be aware of fallen tree limbs, downed power lines and flooded roads.
Summer Waves Water Park and museum trolley tours will be closed Monday, August 3. All other JIA facilities, including the Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum gallery will remain open, at this time.
Glynn County has also released the following update:
The county has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning for the coastal areas and inland areas are under a Coastal Flood Advisory for Monday, August 3, 2020, and into the morning hours of Tuesday, August 4, 2020. A warning means that those areas indicated should prepare for impacts as they are expected soon.
No City of Brunswick, Jekyll Island or Glynn County Offices are expected to be closed on Monday, but some Glynn County Recreation and Parks activities and amenities such as pools will be closed for the day.
As the storm passes on Monday, August 3, shelter in place where possible, and stay out of the water. These storms can cause strong rip tides and higher than normal waves. More than one foot of flooding is predicted in areas that typically flood due to storm surge.
Please continue to use this as a reminder to prepare for hurricane season:
- Secure loose or lightweight items outside your house or business.
- Finalize your disaster kit.
- Ensure you have at least 3 days of water and non-perishable foods.
- Ensure you have extra medications and medical supplies.
- If your medication requires refrigeration, ensure you have a plan in place should you lose power for an extended period of time.
- Make sure all information in your family communication plan is up to date and everyone knows the plan.
- Make provisions for your pet. Make sure they are inside, out of the elements, and have plenty of food and water.
- Flooding is possible in low lying areas - Turn Around Don't Drown!
We advise the public to use the latest forecast models from the NWS and follow guidance on severe weather impacts to Jekyll Island. For emergency preparedness information, including information on whether your residence or business is in a flood zone, visit: www.jekyllisland.com/emergency
