Hit-and-Run resulting in fatality (Arrest)
On July 26, 2020 at around 3:52pm Montebello Police Dispatch received numerous reports of a vehicle versus a pedestrian hit-and-run on Garfield Avenue at Via Paseo. Upon officer’s arrival, they observed a female, in her early 20’s, on the roadway with obvious fatal injuries. Lifesaving measures were not successful. Montebello Fire Department Paramedics pronounced the victim deceased on scene.
The hit-and-run suspect vehicle was described as a Black Scion Xb. According to at least one witness the driver made no attempt to stop and render aid. The suspect vehicle was last seen traveling northbound on Garfield Avenue at a high rate of speed.
Montebello Police Investigators used various investigative techniques to identify the possible suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle was located in the City of Upland on July 29, 2020 at around 5:55pm. A person was seen driving the vehicle which was stopped in the City of Ontario. Christopher Arteaga, 27, from East Los Angeles was arrested for suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.
Since July 29th investigators have been working tirelessly to obtain additional evidence. Investigators were able to obtain sufficient evidence to attain a filing of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The suspect’s bail was set at $85,000 and remains in custody as of the time of this notification.
The vehicle in question was a 2005 dark (black or blue) Scion Xb with California license number 6EKA759. The vehicle was missing the front bumper and grill at the time of the hit-and-run and after the hit-and-run may have sustained damage to the windshield and headlight.
