Current Initiatives and Updates
- Comply, Contain, and Collaborate in Manhattan Beach – Thank you, to everyone who has adapted to our new norm – wearing face coverings when leaving home! As a reminder, face coverings are required anywhere outside of your residence, including at park facilities, the tennis courts, while exercising outdoors, and on the Strand. Manhattan Beach can celebrate as we recently had one day with zero new COVID-19 cases in our City. However, we must remain vigilant and continue to stop the virus in its tracks. The City is proud of our residents who COMPLY with the Public Health Directives so that enforcement is not necessary, continue to wear a face covering, stay 6 feet apart, wash hands frequently, avoid touching your face, and gathering with people you don't live with. For us to remain on the Road to Recovery, we must all CONTAIN the virus. If you're feeling sick, stay home and call your doctor. Let's COLLABORATE. We can't slow the spread of COVID-19 without you. Always wear a face covering when outside your residence. Together, we are positively recovering our community's health.

Federal, State, and County Updates
- Update on COVID-19 Testing – Testing sites can test up to 55,000 residents a week. An additional site operated by Optum Serve will be adding additional capacity starting Monday, August 10, at Hawthorne Memorial Center – Betty Ainsworth Sports Center. L.A. County residents needing a COVID-19 test are strongly encouraged first to contact their Primary Care Provider or Healthcare Center about receiving a test at their facility. Alternatively, another private COVID-19 testing may be available; to find a community testing site near you (e.g., Rite Aid, UCLA Health, UrgentMED, Exer Urgent Care, Quest) use California for ALL Testing Tool. Testing priority at County sites is given to 1) people with symptoms, 2) people working or living in skilled nursing facilities, group homes, residential care facilities and persons experiencing homelessness, and 3) people who were in close contact with someone with COVID-19. Testing availability is subject to change, and testing is by appointment only. To schedule a test, visit lacounty.gov/testing or call 2-1-1.
- DMV Encourages Renewing Licenses Online, Expands Eligibility – The California Department of Motor Vehicles is encouraging eligible Californians to renew their driver's license online – including drivers whose temporary extensions expired July 31. As part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the DMV issued temporary extensions to California drivers age 69 and younger with a noncommercial license expiring between March and July 2020. While that extension expired at the end of July, nearly all drivers can still avoid a trip to a DMV field office by renewing their license online – even if their renewal notice states an office visit is required. Commercial driver's license renewals are the latest digital online option. For more information, a summary of all extensions and options to renew online or by mail, visit dmv.ca.gov.
- COVIDView Surveillance Report – The CDC updated the COVIDView page on July 31. The surveillance report summarizes and interprets key national COVID-19 activity indicators. Download the latest Weekly Summary here. Visit cdc.gov for more information on coronavirus, hospitalization, and mortality across the nation.
- Projections in Healthcare / Predictive Modeling - The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) released an updated COVID-19 Projections of Hospital-based Health Care Demand through July 29. Key findings include:
- The COVID-19 epidemic in Los Angeles County is affecting a younger population, on average, than before;
- As DHS had gained greater experience in treating patients hospitalized with COVID-19, they have learned that a greater share can be effectively cared for without placing them in the ICU or using mechanical ventilation;
- Because of these changes, there has been a decrease in the need for ICU beds and ventilators relative to the number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19; and
- The model suggests that about 1 in 450 (between 1 in 710 and 1 in 290) Los Angeles County residents are currently infectious to others; last week, this estimate was 1 in 320. Visit lacounty.gov for more information.
- $3 Million Available for COVID-19 Recovery Fund - As businesses and nonprofits across the Los Angeles region continue to face challenges in response to the public health and economic crisis of COVID-19, partners across government and philanthropy have come together to deploy $3 million in grants for small businesses, nonprofits, and microentrepreneurs in the L.A. Regional COVID-19 Recovery Fund. The Fund will provide grants of $5K to micro-entrepreneurs and $15K for small businesses and nonprofits affected by the ongoing unprecedented economic pressures caused by COVID-19. Applications for the third round of funding opened August 3 and will close August 7. Visit LACOVIDFund.org to apply and for more information.
- L.A. County Daily Briefing Statistics on COVID-19 – L.A. County Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed 57 new deaths and 1,901 new cases of COVID-19 in today's daily report. The State has determined under-reporting of COVID-19 cases due to technical issues with the electronic laboratory system (ELR) for about two weeks. Once the data reporting issues are fixed, the number of cases is expected to increase. DPH has implemented an independent strategy to obtain accurate data from the 81 labs to obtain all COVID-19 test results from July 26 to the present. DPH is also implementing a system for all labs to report positive test results to the department immediately for accurate case count and to be assured that contact tracing efforts are not delayed. Testing results are available for over 1,818,000 individuals, with 10% of all people testing positive. Of the 13,271 people ever hospitalized, DPH is reporting 1,757 confirmed cases currently hospitalized, and 31% are confirmed cases in the ICU. Hospitalization data for Los Angeles County shows a decrease. DPH is cautiously optimistic that our efforts over the past few weeks may be starting to slow the spread. There are a total of 4,758 deaths; ninety-two percent of people who died had underlying health conditions. To view DPH's COVID-19 Daily Data, visit lacounty.gov. To view L.A. County statistics as part of the State, visit update.covid-19.ca.gov.
The City of Manhattan Beach has proclaimed a Local State of Emergency (PDF) regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Staff continues to monitor and speak with the health experts at Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH), California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Their health expertise and guidance are critical to the City’s planning and response to the coronavirus.
