Update from Mayor Bhalla on COVID-19 and clean-up efforts (8/6)

Impact of COVID-19 in Hoboken

The Hoboken Health Department reported no new COVID-19 cases Tuesday or Wednesday. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been a total of 666 known, confirmed cases with an updated total of 619 full recoveries. Fatalities remain unchanged at 29.

Summer Streets and Slow Streets to continue throughout the summer

I’m pleased to share that in partnership with the Hoboken Business Alliance, we are continuing to modify and expand “Summer Streets” – to provide additional public street space for socially distant outdoor dining, as well as “Slow Streets” – to provide additional public street space for outdoor activities. Summer Streets and Slow Streets will continue in various locations from 6 pm until 10 pm, Thursday through Sunday for the month of August. For exact locations, click here, or see attached. For additional information, visit the Hoboken Business Alliance website at https://www.hobokenalliance.com/

Face mask donations

Any face mask donations for our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) would be very much appreciated and can be dropped off at City Hall (94 Washington Street) through the Newark Street entrance. Thank you to the many community members over the past few months who have generously donated many masks which have been put to good use by our volunteers and first responders.

Hoboken Relief Fund

Thanks to the volunteer board members of the Hoboken Relief Fund and generous donors, over $400,000 was raised for Hoboken small businesses and individuals financially impacted by COVID-19. The first few checks have been issued to certain small businesses with more to come from the relief fund. I know this funding will be put to good use and I’m greatly appreciative to the many community members who have helped initiate this important relief effort.

The Hoboken Relief Fund is continuing to accept donations, which can be made on their website at http://hobokenrelieffund.com. Organizations continue to also help raise money for the fund, including Hoboken Girl’s annual Wellness Crawl (virtual this year) which is donating a percentage of proceeds from ticket sales. More information about the Hoboken Girl Virtual Wellness Crawl can be found at https://www.hobokengirl.com/hoboken-virtual-wellness-crawl-2020/.

Upcoming Blood Drive

The next City-sponsored blood drive will take place Monday, August 17 at the Multi Service Center (124 Grand Street) from 12 noon - 6pm with Vitalant New Jersey. You must have an appointment to donate, and please be sure to wear a mask. Those who are symptomatic or who have been exposed to a confirmed case of COVID within the last 14 days will not be eligible to donate. To sign up for an appointment, please go to:

Clean-up from Tropical Storm Isaias

Thank you to the many City agencies who spent a great deal of time preparing and reacting to the storm, including the Hoboken Police Department, Hoboken Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, and Transportation and Environmental Services Departments, as well as the North Hudson Sewerage Authority. We suffered no injuries in large part because of their hard work and diligent preparations.

Maxwell Park continued closure, all other parks open

Maxwell Park will unfortunately remain closed, with all normal activities in the park postponed, due to several uprooted trees. All other parks have re-opened, with various sections within Church Square Park, Stevens Park, Elysian Park, and behind the Multi-Service Center closed off to allow for the removal of trees and other debris.

PSE&G continues repairs

PSE&G has worked with our Office of Emergency Management to remove power lines from streets and sidewalks. As of last night, four buildings in Hoboken remain without power as PSE&G is scheduled to continue service repairs.

Landscaper to return today

A landscaper will return to Hoboken today to assist with tree removal in public locations including parks.

Adams Street between 1st and 2nd closed to traffic

The block behind the Multi-Service Center is closed to traffic due to a utility pole becoming dislodged, which has been temporarily secured. PSE&G is aware and will work with the Office of Emergency Management to repair the pole.

Large debris picked up today, additional pickup Thursday night

Additional large debris and branches can be put out at the curb tonight (Thursday) for pickup from sanitation crews on Friday.

Thank you,

Ravi S. Bhalla
Mayor
