Covid-19 and Storm Update from the Mayor

This is West Caldwell Mayor Joe Tempesta with a public service announcement regarding the latest Covid-19 updates and the latest recent storm damage updates.
Please be advised the West Caldwell Health Department has confirmed we currently have 4 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in West Caldwell’s general population. These 4 individuals are home quarantined. We have had 6 citizens pass away over the last several months from the virus. Over the last several months we have had a total of 125 cases.

Thankfully we have had 115 cases closed whereby those citizens are recovered and are no longer quarantined. We are also thankful the community is being diligent in social distancing and wearing masks when you cant’s social distance. We encourage you to continue your good diligence and practice these policies for the foreseeable future.

In our two skilled nursing facilities combined we have had no additional Covid cases since last week and in Crane’s Mill we have 1 current case in the skilled nursing and sub-acute division. In the Hackensack Meridian Health WC Care Center, remains 1 current case of Covid-19. Tragically though over the last several months we have had 44 deaths in those facilities.

I also ask that you continue to join me in thanking all our first responders and a special thanks to all our teachers in our community. I also thank you for continuing to patronize our restaurants and retail stores that are open for business.

Regarding the most recent storm damage, all our 162 streets are open except for Smull Avenue. PSE&G and our DPW staff has been working on Smull Avenue since this morning. PSE&G also reports they have has restored all but less than 100 customers of the original 3,000 residents in West Caldwell that lost power since Tuesday afternoon.

West Caldwell’s cooling and charging center is open and will remain open until 9:00 p.m. this evening. Our cooling/charging station will also be open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday if necessary. Our cooling/charging center is located at the West Caldwell Municipal building located at 30 Clinton Road.

The cooling/charging center will be limited to 25 people at one time due to the Covid-19 rules set by the State of New Jersey. Social distancing and masks must be worn.

Also please remember if you are using a generator make sure it is outside in an open vented area.

Please be advised if you have storm debris you may put it out at the curb and the Department of Public Works will pick up this debris for the next 2 weeks. This pick up is only for storm related debris. If possible, kindly put the debris in 4 ft. bundles.

We will update you again over the weekend and at that time we should have better estimates from PSE&G on when power restoration will be completed.

Remember if you have an emergency please call 911.

Thank you.
