Mayor’s Message of August 8, 2020

This is West Caldwell Mayor Joe Tempesta with a public service announcement regarding the recent storm damage updates.

Our damage and outages remaining are mostly on Smull Avenue. Work crews are still working and I just came back from there myself at 4:00 p.m., today and I’m recording this call approximately 4:30 this afternoon. For those who don’t live there you cannot imagine the enormity of the damage-poles down , trees down, and wires down and 6 transformers exploded as well-all on Smull avenue. If you live near there and have power kindly offer a friend or neighbor help if you can. I do not have confidence that power will be restored to Smull Avenue this evening and for a few others on Elmwood Terrace and Redman terrace. PSE&G tells us there are less than 50 people in West Caldwell without power. We won’t stop trying to put pressure on PSE&G until the last home has power back.

As a result, West Caldwell’s cooling and charging center is open and will remain open until 9:00 p.m. this evening. Our cooling/charging station will also be open tomorrow, Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Our library will be back open as usual on Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and can be utilized as a cooling and charging station. Hopefully by then all residents will have their power back. Our cooling/charging center is located at the West Caldwell Municipal building located at 30 Clinton Road.

The cooling/charging center will be limited to 25 people at one time due to the Covid-19 rules set by the State of New Jersey. Social distancing and masks must be worn.

Also please remember if you are using a generator make sure it is outside in an open vented area.

Please be advised if you have storm debris you may put it out at the curb and the Department of Public Works will pick up this debris for the next 2 weeks. This pick up is only for storm related debris. If possible, kindly put the debris in 4 ft. bundles.

We will update you tomorrow evening or as soon as we get better estimates from PSE&G on when power restoration will be completed.

Remember if you have an emergency please call 911.

Thank you.
