DUI Checkpoint Nets Multiple Arrests & Citations

DUI Checkpoint Nets Multiple Arrests & Citations

Rialto, Calif. – During a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on Friday, August 7th, 2020, the Rialto Police Department, along with officers from the Upland Police Department, screened 478 vehicles for DUI and unlicensed drivers. The screening resulted in the arrest of 2 drivers for DUI (driving under the influence) of alcohol and 3 drivers for DUI alcohol and drugs. The checkpoint was conducted in the area of the 800 block of west Baseline Rd in the City of Rialto between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.

In addition, 25 drivers were cited/arrested with 2 vehicles impounded for driving without a valid license; 15 drivers were cited/arrested with 12 of their vehicles impounded for driving under a suspended/revoked license and 3 drivers were arrested on other criminal charges.

DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. In 2017, 1,120 people were killed in alcohol-involved crashes on California roads. In 2018, the Rialto Police Department investigated 176 DUI collisions which claimed 5 lives and resulted in another 103 injuries.

Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to be approximately $13,500. This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses not to mention possible jail time.

The Rialto Police Dept reminds drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” Prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, can impair and result in a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs.

The Police Department will be conducting another DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, August 21st, 2020 in our ongoing commitment to take suspected impaired drivers off our streets and highways, ultimately lowering the risk for deaths and injuries.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
