Detectives are investigating a deputy involved shooting after a Barstow deputy was attacked by a man with a machete

INCIDENT: Attempted Murder / Deputy Involved Shooting
LOCATION: 41000 block of Dogwood Street, Newberry Springs
VICTIM: Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Barstow Sheriff’s Station
SUSPECT: Anthony Oetken, 58 years old, resident of Newberry Springs
SUMMARY:
On Monday, August 10, 2020, at 9:09 p.m., deputies from the Barstow Sheriff’s Station responded to a domestic disturbance call on Dogwood Street in Newberry Springs. The caller said a family member was at the home causing a disturbance. Two deputies, in the same vehicle, arrived at the home. As the deputies exited their vehicle, the suspect came out of the bushes and attacked the deputy on the passenger side with a machete. A third deputy arrived as the attack occurred and a deputy involved shooting occurred. The deputy and suspect were airlifted to different hospitals for treatment.
Detectives with the Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail responded to conduct the investigation.
The deputy suffered numerous wounds to his upper body as a result of the attack and is expected to recover.
The suspect, identified as Anthony Oetken, is expected to survive and upon release from the hospital, will be booked for attempted murder.
