COVID-19 Update: Situation Report (August 11, 2020) See details:

Current Initiatives and Updates

  • Help Us, Help You – Remember, some people without symptoms are able to spread the virus. By wearing face coverings, you may be protecting others from getting COVID-19. The sooner you and everyone else (who is able or older than age two) wear a face cover all-the-time, everytime outside your household, the sooner more businesses and activities can resume. Face covers are required everywhere in Manhattan Beach, at all our parks, including all activities in our parks, even exercising alone in a park and at the beach, just not while swimming in the water. It is the community's shared responsibility to slow the spread of COVID-19. By wearing face coverings, adhering to social distancing, hand washing, avoiding crowds, confined spaces, and close contact, we can collectively prevent future surges in coronavirus cases.
  • City Extends Outdoor Dining Hours – The City is fortunate to have fantastic outdoor dining options. As part of the City's ongoing efforts to support the business community, outdoor operating hours for restaurants have been extended from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Last call for food and beverage is 10:30 PM. Customers must depart the restaurants' dining areas by 11:00 PM. While operating outdoors, all employees and customers must continue to follow Public Health Orders and City Orders, including wearing face coverings and physical distancing at all times. Diners may remove their face covering only while eating food and drinking beverages.

Federal, State, and County Updates

  • COVID-19 Guidance on Higher Education – The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued the interim guidelines for colleges and universities to reduce risk when in-person instruction resumes. The guidelines and considerations are based on the best available public health data at this time, international best practices currently employed, and the practical realities of managing operations. As in all guidance documents issued, as new data and practices emerge, the guidance will be updated. Visit covid19.ca.gov to read the COVID-19 Industry Guidance: Institutions of Higher Education.
  • Support for Disproportionate Communities Impacted by COVID-19 - Governor Gavin Newsom announced $81.8 million in additional commitments from private and philanthropic partners to provide resources and services for individuals needing to isolate or quarantine. The funds will help mitigate the spread and deepen containment. Californians without supportive isolation and quarantine will be connected with food assistance and delivery, support for rent payments, child care, pharmacy deliveries, health care services, and employment-based assistance and protections. Visit ca.gov for more information.
  • Latest COVID-19 State Facts The CDPH released the most recent state COVID-19 statistics. Key points include 1) California has over 550,000 confirmed cases to date; 2) as case numbers continue to rise, the total number of serious outcomes will also increase – there have been 10,293 deaths since the start of the pandemic; 3) 29 cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) reported (parents should be aware of MIS-C signs and symptoms and contact a doctor immediately to prevent long-term complications); and 4) County Monitoring Data - a total of 38 California counties are required to close indoor operation for certain business sectors based on the July 13 Public Health Order to slow community transmission. The State has made the statistical information and other COVID-19 data available to view COVID-19 in more meaningful terms through:
Public Health acknowledged technical issues with the Electronic Laboratory Reporting system resulting in a backlog of testing records; the issue is resolved. Visit cdph.ca.gov for more information.
  • Respite Care During the Pandemic – The Administration for Community Living  updated the National Guidelines on Providing and Receiving Respite Safely During the Pandemic. The guidelines provide caretakers and family caregivers with careful and thoughtful strategies in respite care as safely as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Visit acl.gov for more information.
  • Safely Serve During COVID-19 and When Social Distancing Ends - The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is committed to improving lives across the country, that means meeting community-identified needs and being there when it matters the most. CNCS has identified Ten Ways You Can Get Involved To Help Others During the Pandemic Safely. Visit nationalservice.gov for more information.
  • CARES Act Supports Nursing Homes The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the distribution of the next CARES Act authorized for nursing home Provider Relief Funds. Unlike prior distributions, the funds are linked to performance. Almost 40% of all U.S. COVID-19 deaths, totaling tens of thousands, were nursing-home related. The performance-based distribution intends to ensure better outcomes. For more information, visit hhs.gov.
  • Research Seeks to Identify Children at Risk for MIS-C - The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced it would research children at high risk for developing Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), a severe complication of COVID-19. Most children exposed to or infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, develop only a mild form of the illness. However, others go on to develop MIS-C, a severe, sometimes fatal, inflammation of organs and tissues, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, and eyes. For more information about NIH and its programs, visit nih.gov.
  • Help for Homeowners - The Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs and Center for Financial Empowerment is hosting a free webinar titled Help for Homeowners. As many deal with a variety of COVID-19 issues, property owners in Los Angeles County may face uncertainty when dealing with the ability to make monthly mortgage payments. Attend this webinar to learn about homeowners' rights and responsibilities. Advanced registration required. Visit dcba.lacounty.gov for more information.
  • L.A. County Daily Briefing Statistics on COVID-19 – L.A. County Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed 63 new deaths and 1,440 new cases of COVID-19 in today's daily report. The number of new cases reported today is missing lab reports from one of the larger labs, which is contributing to the lower number of new cases. Today's numbers do not include backlog numbers. The State indicated that a backlog of lab reports for L.A County from the State electronic laboratory system (ELR) should be reconciled this week. To date, Public Health has identified 211,808 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County, and a total of 5,057 deaths; ninety-two percent of people who died had underlying health conditions. Testing results are available for more than 1,965,000 individuals, with 10% of all people testing positive. Currently, there are 1,524 confirmed cases currently hospitalized, and 32% are confirmed cases in the ICU. The number of hospitalized patients continues to decrease. Daily hospitalizations were over 2,000 patients a month ago. Adults ages 18 to 49 make up 56% of the confirmed cases in L.A. County; one of the deaths reported today is of a young adult under the age of 29. The loss of this life serves as a reminder that the risk of the virus is real, and no matter your age, the virus can be deadly. To protect yourself, your family, and your community, wear face coverings, and, combined with other preventive measures, such as frequent hand-washing and physical distancing, you will slow the spread of the COVID-19.
