Crime Alert Bulletin July 20-August 9 (Part 1 of 2)

**This bulletin contains information from the past three weeks, and Nixel messaging has a limit to character posting, so I will have to split this up into two messages.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 07-20-20 at 11:55 p.m., Officer Todaro was dispatched to the area of Woodrow Street and Westlake Avenue on a report of an unoccupied vehicle left in the roadway. Officer Todaro arrived and discovered two subjects sleeping in the backseat. One of the subjects, a 44-year old San Francisco resident, had an outstanding warrant for narcotics possession. Officer Todaro asked the subject if he had any weapons or illegal drugs on his person, and the subject said he did not. The subject consented to being searched, and the officer found a clear plastic bag containing methamphetamine in the subject’s jacket pocket. Officer Todaro contacted the second subject, a 51-year old San Francisco resident, and she was reported missing from San Francisco in December 2019 by her elderly mother. Officer Todaro cited the first subject for possession of methamphetamine and he removed the second subject from the Missing Person’s System.

On Tuesday, 07-21-20 at 8:34 a.m., Officer Tualaulelei was dispatched to the Target store at the Westlake Shopping Center on a report of a just-occurred robbery with a knife. The dispatcher gave a description of the subject, and Sergeant Haralambidis found a subject matching the description traveling on his bicycle on Park Plaza Drive near Coronado Avenue. The reporting party, a Target security guard, said he noticed a male enter the store, and he recognized the subject from two days ago when the suspect stole alcohol. The security guard radioed his coworker to assist. The reporting party told the subject he saw him conceal liquor his backpack and told him to put back the items. The 18-year old security guard said the suspect reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a knife and brandished it at him. The security guards let the subject leave. Officer Tualaulelei placed the subject, a 28-year old San Francisco resident, under arrest for robbery and possession of a methamphetamine pipe.

On Thursday, 07-23-20 at 7:43 a.m., Officer Andrade was dispatched to the area of Bepler Street and Mission Street on a report of a subject detained for burglary. The reporting party/victim said he was walking to his work truck he parked in the municipal parking lot and noticed a dustpan that was supposed to be in the truck was on the ground near his truck. The 28-year old victim said he also noticed the passenger side window of his truck was smashed. The victim looked around to see if anyone was nearby, and he saw a subject holding onto a broom at the bus stop. The victim recognized the broom as belonging to his work truck, and he also saw more tools belonging to his work by the subject in the bus stop. The victim confronted the subject and asked why he had his property. The victim dialed 911, and he said the subject started to run. The victim was able to extend one of his legs and tripped the subject, causing the subject to fall to the ground. The victim was able to detain the suspect until police arrived, and he signed a citizen arrest form. The suspect, a 42-year old transient, was arrested for burglary and possession of narcotic paraphernalia.

On Friday, 07-24-20 at 6:45 a.m., Officer Angeles and Officer Shoopman were dispatched to the 100 block of Oakridge Drive on a report of a just-occurred auto burglary. The reporting party said her father in law’s vehicle was burglarized by a suspect who was in a black SUV. The reporting party’s boyfriend was following the suspect vehicle as they were driving into San Francisco. San Francisco P.D. responded and conducted a traffic stop on the suspected vehicle. After an investigation, the driver, a 32-year old Oakland resident, was arrested for conspiracy to commit a crime, auto burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, and vehicle theft. (The vehicle the driver was in was stolen from Daly City.)

On Saturday, 07-25-20 at 12:22 a.m., Officer Greene was dispatched to a disturbance call at the 7-Eleven store on Hillside Boulevard. Two subjects stole items from the store, and two clerks ran outside to confront the subjects. The clerks stepped in front of the vehicle the subjects were in, and the male driver accelerated the vehicle and forced both clerks onto the hood of the vehicle, a 2019 Nissan Kick. The clerks fell off the vehicle and sustained minor injuries. Officer Greene learned the same vehicle was involved in a robbery in Foster City in May, and the subjects in that case were arrested. Additionally, the same vehicle and subjects were involved in and arrested for a robbery in South San Francisco on July 20th. On 08-01-20, the San Francisco Police Department advised they had stopped the vehicle, and our detectives arrived and placed the male suspect, a 31-year old transient male, under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. They placed the other suspect, a 32-year old transient female, under arrest for robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime.

On Wednesday, 07-29-20 at 12:59 p.m., Officer Tualaulelei was dispatched to the UPS store at the Westlake Shopping Center on a report of a security guard who was bleeding after being assaulted in the head. The dispatcher gave a description of the suspect who was carrying a piece of luggage. A witness said he was sitting in his vehicle parked in front of the UPS store and saw a subject leaving the Ross store with a piece of luggage. He said he saw a security guard behind the subject and that they were pulling and pushing each other, and then he saw the security guard fall to the ground. The witness said he followed the suspect who ran across John Daly Boulevard to the apartments near Original Joe’s. The witness saw a subject get out of a silver vehicle who took the luggage and put it into the trunk. The witness saw other pieces of luggage inside the trunk. The witness said he last saw the vehicle go on John Daly Boulevard towards Highway 35. The suitcase was taken from the Ross store, and it contained an unknown number of miscellaneous items. The 26-security guard suffered injuries to his ear and was knocked unconscious for several seconds. The witness described the first suspect as a Hispanic male in his 20’s, with long hair, 5’9”, and 200 lbs. The witness described the second suspect as a Hispanic female in her 20’s with long hair. (The female was with the first suspect in the Ross store who was seen placing items into the suitcase.) The witness described the third suspect as a Hispanic male in his 30’s with a tall build. This case is assigned to investigators.

On Wednesday, 07-29-20 at 6:36 p.m., officers were dispatched to the unit block of Park Manor Drive on a report of a package theft. The dispatcher advised an unknown female subject had taken packages from an unknown residence and attempted to flee in a Lincoln Continental, but the battery had died. The dispatcher gave a description of the subject and the vehicle, and Officer Covarrubias contacted the subject in the vehicle. The officer saw a large box with “Amazon” tape and a delivery label on the front passenger seat. The officer asked the subject if she was familiar with the area, and she said she was not. The subject said her friend dropped her off and asked her to pick up a package and move the vehicle. The subject said her friend lived on Creston Avenue, but she was not home. Officer Covarrubias asked the subject if he could search the rest of the vehicle, and the subject consented. The officer found an empty Amazon envelope with a label of an address on Southgate Avenue. Officer Herrera contacted the resident on Creston Avenue, and the resident did not know the subject. Officer Covarrubias asked the suspect to exit to vehicle, and she handed him a single Lincoln key and a vehicle remote. The officer asked Officer Reyes to go to the Southgate Avenue address, which where the Lincoln was registered, to see if the owner knew the whereabouts of his vehicle. The owner said he parked his car on Creston Avenue and may have left the keys in the vehicle. Officer Covarrubias issued a citation to the suspect, a 28-year old Daly City resident, for attempted vehicle theft and petty theft.

On Wednesday, 07-29-20 at 8:21 p.m., Officer Hightower was dispatched to the Old Navy store on a report of a found firearm. A store employee reported that someone called saying he left his bag in the Men’s Department and wanted to retrieve it. The employee found the bag, felt it was very heavy for its size, and found a gun inside the bag. Officer Ortiz also responded and reviewed the store security footage and Serramonte Mall security footage and identified an associated vehicle. While Officer Hightower was booking the bag in at the police station, Officer Ortiz advised that two subjects in the vehicle seen in the security footage were back at the store. Officer Hightower returned to the store and cited one subject, a 25-year old San Francisco resident, for possession of burglary tools, and he cited the other subject, a 25-year old San Francisco resident, for possession of a concealed firearm, possession of a loaded firearm not registered to him, and possession of a loaded firearm in a public place.

On Saturday, 08-01-20 at 8:05 p.m., Officer Jackson-Berrios was dispatched to the 600 block of Schwerin Street on a report of a transient man sitting in front of the reporting party’s mother’s residence. The reporting party the man was walking back and forth between the church next door and his mother’s house. Officer Jackson-Berrios contacted the subject who provided false information to her. The officer subsequently arrested the subject, a 32-year old transient, for providing false information to a police officer, resisting a police officer, and for possession of an open container on a public sidewalk.

On Sunday, 08-02-20 at 9:57 a.m. Officer Perdomo was dispatched to the Target store at the Serramonte Shopping Center on a report of a just-occurred robbery. The Loss Prevention Officer said he saw a subject who was attempting to steal two bottles of wine and phone case, and when he confronted the subject, he said the subject threatened him with a wine bottle. The suspect fled in a blue Nissan SUV. Officer Taylor located the vehicle on northbound Highway 280 and conducted a traffic stop. The suspect, a 25-year old transient, had an outstanding felony no-bail warrant from San Francisco and was arrested for the warrant, robbery, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, and possession of lost property.

On Sunday, 08-02-20 at approximately 4:01 p.m., Officer Chittenden was dispatched to the area of the CVS store on Pierce Street on a report of someone yelling for help and screaming. Officer Chittenden saw a subject matching the description who was yelling, screaming incoherently, and throwing his arms around while he was walking on Sullivan Avenue. Officer Chittenden contacted the subject and recognized him from a prior arrest he made on the subject for being under the influence of a controlled substance. Officer Chittenden asked the subject to sit on the curb, and the subject squirmed uncontrollably on the ground and was drooling when he spoke. Officer Chittenden placed the subject, a 48-year old San Jose resident, under arrest for being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of cocaine base, possession of heroin, and possession of a switchblade.

On Monday, 08-03-20 at approximately 1:44 p.m., we received a report of three unknown Hispanic suspects who discharged a firearm several times into the hillside adjacent to a residence on the 700 block of Acton Street. There were no injuries, and detectives are following up on leads.

On Saturday, 08-09-20 at 10:41 p.m., a 48-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of a drug and driving under the influence of a drug causing an injury after he was involved in a collision in the area of John Daly Boulevard and Cliffside Drive. The other driver, a 66-year old Santa Rosa UBER driver, lost consciousness and suffered pain to his back, neck, and heart. His passenger, a 16-year old Daly City resident, complained of whiplash.


Robberies

There were seven robberies and one attempted robbery during the past three weeks.


On Monday, 07-20-20 at 9:40 p.m., Officer Lizana was dispatched to the parking lot of the Walgreen’s store on Mission Street on a report of a just-occurred vehicle theft. The victim, a 46-year old San Francisco resident, said he came to the store to buy more minutes for his re-loadable cellphone. He said he parked his vehicle, got out of his vehicle with the engine running, and went to his trunk to retrieve items. The victim said he was at the trunk for less than one minute when a male subject approached him from his right side, stuck “something hard” into his right side and said, “Move or I will kill you”. The victim said the suspect, only described as a male wearing a dark colored mask and a red sweater, got into his 2017 Kia Optima and drove out of the parking lot, southbound on Mission Street. This investigation is continuing.

On Wednesday, 07-29-20 at 12:59 p.m., a robbery occurred in front of the UPS store at the Westlake Shopping Center. See “Notable Reports” for more information.

On Saturday, 08-01-20 at approximately 6:40 p.m., seven masked juveniles entered the Walgreen’s store on Mission Street, concealed items in bags and fled the store without paying for the merchandise. While a 43-year old employee grabbed one of the fleeing suspects, another suspect hit him in the back of the head. The suspect the employee had grabbed then threw a glass container at the employee. The victim could only identify the suspects as four black males between the ages of 15-18 and three Hispanic males between the ages of 15-18. This investigation is continuing.

On Sunday, 08-02-20 at 9:57 a.m. a robbery occurred at the Target store at the Serramonte Shopping Center. See “Notable Reports” for more information.

On Sunday, 08-02-20 at approximately 6:55 p.m., Officer Jackson-Berrios was dispatched to the Walgreen’s store on Mission Street on a report of four male subjects who used a skateboard to smash perfume counter cases. The reporting party saw the subjects getting onto a bus. Officer Premenko advised he was behind the bus and saw several male juveniles exiting the bus, carrying bags and running. Officer Arguelles, Officer Haas, Sergeant Hussain, Officer Mendiara, Officer Sunga, Officer Lizana and Officer Kett also responded, chased the subjects on foot, and collectively, they detained five suspects. The five subjects, ranging from 14-16 years old and residents of Richmond, Oakland and San Francisco, were all arrested for robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime and were transported to the Youth Services Center. These suspects are believed to be related to five other recent robberies.

On Thursday, 08-06-20 at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Target store at the Westlake Shopping Center called to report that a subject brandished a knife at an employee. An employee heard the electronic sensor sounding when the subject cut the packaging from earphones. The 26-year old employee said when he told the subject to give the items back, the subject brandished a knife and quickly ran towards the escalator and left the store in an awaiting vehicle. The victim described the suspect as a black male, approximately 25-30 years old, wearing a red and black hat, black jacket, black pants with white designs and red shoes. This investigation is continuing.

On Tuesday, 07-21-20 at 12:50 a.m., Officer Dhaliwal was dispatched to a residence on the 100 block of North Mayfair Avenue on the report of a woman at the reporting party’s front door who said someone was chasing her. Officer Brenes assisted in the initial translation and said there was an attempted armed robbery via knife by two suspects. The victim, a 39-year old Daly City resident, said she was confronted by a male subject holding a knife who told her to give him her bicycle. The victim said the second suspect attempted to grab her. She said the suspects then ran away, and she went to the first house she could to report the incident. The victim was not injured and refused medical attention. This investigation is continuing.


Residential Burglaries

There were three residential burglaries and four attempted residential burglaries during the past three weeks.


Between Sunday, 07-26-20 and Thursday 07-30-20 at an unknown time, an unknown suspect took a passport, Kindle, cellphone and cryptocurrency wallet from a backpack in a closet of a room at an Airbnb room on the 100 block of Hillcrest Drive.

Between 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday 08-05-20 and Thursday, 08-06-20 at 5:00 p.m., an unknown suspect forced entry through the rear door of a residence on the unit block of Roslyn Court and stole approximately $400 in miscellaneous cosmetics.

Between 10:00 a.m. on Friday, 08-07-20 and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, 08-08-20, an unknown suspect entered a residence via an unknown means on the unit block of Palisades Drive and took approximately $8 worth of food. The victim found chocolate wrappers and crumbs where the items had been stored.

On Tuesday, 07-21-20 between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., an unknown suspect pried open the front door and picked a lock to a steel gate patio gate but did not make entry. This occurred on the 100 block of Accacia Street.

On Tuesday, 07-21-20 between 10:55 a.m. and 11:05 a.m., an unknown suspect pried open the locked front metal gate to a residence on the unit block of Jacqueline Court but did not make entry into the residence.

On Wednesday, 07-22-20 at approximately 1:11 a.m., a resident on the 100 block of Los Banos Avenue confronted a subject who was removing the window screen from his living room window. The suspect apologized and walked away from the residence. The victim could only describe the suspect as a bald black male wearing a black jacket, blue pants, a face mask and was carrying a dark colored backpack. Officers could not locate the suspect.

On Thursday, 08-06-20 between 4:10 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., an unknown suspect attempted to enter a residence on the unit block of Roslyn Court by prying off the screen to a rear window. The window was locked, and entry was not made. The victim looked at her surveillance video and said the suspect wore a heavy black jacket, black backpack and a black knit cap.


Commercial Burglaries

There were seven commercial burglaries and two attempted commercial burglaries during the past three weeks.


On Tuesday, 07-21-20 between 2:00 p.m. and 2:05 p.m., an unknown suspect stole jewelry and clothing from a room at the Bridgepoint Inn on Geneva Avenue. This investigation is continuing.

On Monday, 07-27-20 at approximately 3:57 a.m., an unknown suspect pried an apartment complex mailbox and stole mail from 20 slots. This occurred at 990 St. Francis Boulevard.

On Monday, 07-27-20 between 3:30 a.m. and 3:57 a.m., an unknown suspect pried an apartment complex mailbox and possibly stole mail from 20 slots. This occurred at 1020 St. Francis Boulevard.

On Tuesday, 07-28-20 at approximately 1:24 p.m., an unknown suspect removed a combination lock from a locker inside the women’s locker room at the Crunch Fitness gym and took property belonging to two people. The property included prescription glasses, headphones, jewelry, contact lenses, vape pen, tote, gym clothes, a key to a 2015 Audi A3 and a wallet containing a credit card. The suspect was able to successfully use the credit card to purchase items.
