SHERIFF VICTOR HILL Awards Jail Medical Staff For Keeping COVID-19 Infection Spread Under %1

Doctor Charles Clopton who is the head physician for the Clayton County Jail received a letter of commendation along with his staff for their outstanding performance during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.  In a jail that has consistently housed over 1800 inmates, and has a staff of over 500 employees, only approximately 102 inmates and employees combined have tested positive for Covid-19 since the pandemic started.  This equates to less than 1% of the the total amount of employees and inmates!  Add to these facts that many of the inmates who tested positive are now negative, or no longer incarcerated is another tribute to Dr. Clopton’s leadership and his staff!

Numbers do not lie, but unfortunately some media outlets do.  Interestingly, the Clayton County Jail came under attack by organizations who filed  frivolous lawsuits and some media outlets for having an alleged “outbreak” of Covid-19.  Not so said Dr. Clopton who in his report estimated the infection rate to be at 0.5%.  One media outlet went as far to alleged that the Clayton County Jail had a confirmed Covid 19 death.  No so confirmed Dr. Clopton.  The inmate in question that passed away after being arrested for a murder at a assisted senior living center “had multiple cardiovascular medical problems which contributed to his death” said Dr. Clopton.  Dr. Clopton is certain that the lawsuits will either be dismissed, or defeated in court!

What makes this medical staff handling of the pandemic crisis so special and appreciated is that it helped the Sheriff’s decision to take a “political” risk to insure the safety of Clayton County a huge success!  Unlike most jurisdictions across the county, Sheriff Hill did not feel releasing half of the jail population was the correct response.  Jurisdictions that did so saw a notable increase in crime.  Furthermore, if the alleged outbreak of COVID-19 at the jail was truly a reality, releasing positive tested individuals into the community certainly would not stop the spread when they could remain isolated and receive medical treatment instead.  The medical staff under the leadership of Dr. Clopton rose to the occasion and kept the spread of Covid-19 extremely low while the Sheriff’s Office along with the Clayton County Police Department and Municipal agencies have continued to successfully keep the spread of crime low.

The Sheriff also complimented the medical staff for bravely coming to work during a fearful situation with unknown variables.   “There is no way we would be this successful working through this crisis without Dr. Clopton and his staff” said Sheriff Hill.  “It is my honor to recognize him and his staff with the truth of how well they have kept our employees and inmates safe during this pandemic”.
