Update from Mayor Bhalla on COVID-19 (8/14)

Below is an update from Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla on COVID-19:

Impact of COVID-19 in Hoboken

The Hoboken Health Department reported the following new COVID-19 cases:

August 12: 2 new cases
August 13: 1

Hoboken now has a total of 687 known, confirmed COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic. Fatalities remain unchanged at 29.

Testing available on Monday and Tuesday with Prompt MD

As mentioned in the last update, Prompt MD has added 350 COVID-19 testing slots on both Monday and Tuesday for Hoboken residents between 8 am and 3 pm at our new pop-up testing site at 605 Jackson Street. Appointments are still available, please sign up at http://www.hobokennj.gov/promptmd. If signing up your child for a test, please enter the child’s information, and include the parent’s identification and insurance card in the respective section. If you need to cancel your appointment for any reason, please do so at the link provided.

Update on rapid tests

Due to a nationwide shortage of rapid COVID-19 tests, Riverside currently is utilizing non-rapid testing at their site for some patients and reserving rapid tests for those with symptoms or who are at-risk. Riverside has ordered more rapid tests, however non-rapid tests may be used for most residents at their site for the near future. We apologize for the inconvenience it may have caused for residents scheduled for testing over the next several days.

Applications for businesses grants through CARES Act close by end of day Friday

As a reminder, our applications for small business grants through the CARES Act provided by Hoboken and Hudson County close by the end of the day. For more information and to apply, visit http://www.hobokennj.gov/smallbusinessgrants.

Summer streets and slow streets to continue this weekend

Summer streets, in partnership with the Hoboken Business Alliance, will continue this weekend to provide additional space for socially distant, outdoor dining and shopping. Due to feedback from residents and businesses, summer streets are no longer occurring downtown by the PATH, however all other closures remain the same from the previous weekend.

Friday (and Thursday/yesterday) evening, from 6 pm to 10:00 pm:

  • “Summer Streets” Uptown - 14th Street from Bloomfield Street to Hudson Street; open to pedestrians only
  • “Slow Streets” Uptown Washington Street from 11th Street to 15th Street; parking and deliveries will be permitted on Washington Street with local traffic at 5 MPH
Saturday and Sunday:
  • “Slow Streets” Downtown Washington Street from 1st Street to 7th Street from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.; parking and deliveries will be permitted on Washington Street with local traffic at 5 MPH
  • Downtown 1st Street from Washington Street to Garden Street will be open to pedestrians only from noon to 10 p.m., no parking will be permitted
The Downtown Waterfront on Sinatra Drive from Newark Street to 4th Street will be open to pedestrians only all day (weekdays will be closed to traffic and parking other than local deliveries at all times through October).

Office of Constituent Services no longer in operation

The Office of Constituent Services has been disbanded, following an ordinance enacted by the Hoboken City Council in May. Unfortunately, as a result of this ordinance, which I strongly opposed, the office has been eliminated and no longer in operation. Due to the office closing, Caroline Caulfield, the former Chief of Constituent Affairs, has chosen to depart City Hall.

I’m very grateful for the services Caroline, as well as Migdalia Pagan-Milano, provided to the residents of Hoboken over the past two years. Since we established the Office of Constituent Services in 2018, Caroline has been the go-to person for our most vulnerable populations, assisting with critical issues including homelessness, housing needs, senior assistance, and assisted hundreds of residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. I wish Caroline well, and know that she has an incredibly bright future ahead of her.

With the Office of Constituent Services no longer in operation, residents requesting assistance should contact the respective department in City Hall, which will assign a staff member for assistance. Contact information for each respective department can be found at http://www.hobokennj.gov. Residents may also utilize the Hoboken 311 system for constituent services.
