Heat Advisory Issued Until 9 PM & Tips to Help You Stay Cool During the Hot Weather

The National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area has issued a Heat Advisory that is in effect until 9 p.m.

We advise everyone to stay well-hydrated as the extended heat is anticipated today through Wednesday, August 19, 2020, across the San Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast.

With the elevated heat increasing the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable populations and those working outdoors or in areas without air conditioning, we’d like to encourage everyone to make friendly phone calls to check in with their neighbors, especially home-bound elderly and vulnerable populations in Fremont.

Here are a few safety tips to help you protect yourself and stay safe in the hot weather:

-Avoid activities in direct sunlight as much as possible. Plan your outdoor activities either early in the morning or when the sun starts to set.
-Drink plenty of fluids even if you are not thirsty. Avoid alcohol. Take a cold bottle of water with you when you’re out and about.
-Make sure you’re getting enough sleep and rest when you feel tired. Consider reducing outdoor physical activity.
-Wear protective clothing. A wide-brimmed hat and light-colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothes (made of natural fibers like cotton or linen) help protect against the heat when you are outdoors.
-Try eating cold foods, like fruits and salads that contain water and are more refreshing in hotter weather. Limit your intake of hot, salty or spicy foods that may add heat to your body and/or increase dehydration.
-Set your air conditioner between 75° to 80°. If you don’t have air-conditioning, take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath when you’re feeling warm. You can also use wet washcloths or towels with cool water and put them on your wrists, ankles, armpits, and neck as an alternative.
-Check on elderly neighbors, those who may not ask for help, and family and friends who do not have air conditioning.
-Don’t forget about your pets, they need plenty of water and shade.
