National Weather Service Issues Red Flag Warning Until 11 AM, PG&E Encourages Energy Conservation and Advises of Possible Power Outages

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from 11 PM tonight through 11 AM on Sunday, August 16, 2020. The Red Flag Warning was issued due to anticipated dry lightning strikes throughout the Bay Area.

A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions will occur in the form of low humidity, high heat and wind. Red Flag Warnings are typically issued for weather events that may result in extreme fire behavior within 24 hours. The Fremont Fire Department will have extra firefighters on duty to augment fire protection in the City of Fremont.

We would like to encourage Fremont residents, businesses and visitors to be extremely cautious during the Red Flag Warning and throughout the days ahead as high fire danger and the heatwave continue.

Here are a few tips on how you can help prevent wildfires:

Equipment Safety:
-Never mow or trim dry grass on a Red Flag Warning Day. (Mow before 10 AM on a day when it is NOT hot and windy).
-Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation.
-Avoid power equipment that creates sparks.
-Spark arresters are required in wildland areas on all portable gasoline powered equipment.

Vehicle Safety:
-Never pull over in dry grass.
-Ensure trailer chains don't drag on the ground.
-Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained.

General Safety:
-Make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished.
-Avoid activities with open flames or sparks.
-Never burn landscape debris like leaves or branches on NO Burn Days or when it's windy or areas where not allowed.
-Dial 911 immediately if you see smoke or fire.

Due to the increasing hot temperatures and current power usage forecasts from the state’s electric grid operator, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is encouraging customers to conserve energy through Wednesday, August, 19, 2020, and has advised of the possibility of rotating power outages tonight through 10 PM. According to PG&E, these outages would be one to two hours in duration and no customers should be impacted overnight.
