Electricity and Weather Update
August 16, 2020
Mill Valley Residents and Neighbors,
A quick electricity and weather update with some links to additional resources.
The California Independent System Operator (ISO) manages the flow of electricity across the high-voltage, long-distance power lines that make up 80 percent of California’s and a small part of Nevada’s grid. On Friday, the ISO declared a Stage 3 Electrical Emergency after extreme heat drove up electricity demand across California, causing the ISO to dip into its operating reserves for supply to cover demand. The emergency initiates an order to PG&E to immediately implement rotating outages throughout the state to maintain the electric grid’s stability. The ISO can declare a Flex Alert whenever there is expected stress on the system, which generally occurs during heat waves when electrical demand is high. Click here for more information on Flex Alerts, how to conserve energy, and to sign up for notifications.
Currently, the ISO is not planning for a Stage 3 Electrical Emergency to be declared today. However, with the expected heatwave conditions to continue, we strongly advise all residents and businesses to be prepared. Be sure to update your information with PG&E so they may communicate directly with you as they receive information. According to PG&E’s 7-day forecast, no Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events are expected.
Additionally, a Red Flag Warning is still in effect and parking on Miller Avenue is restricted. Please be fire-wise and cautious, hydrated and safe from the heat, and be ready for anything!
If conditions change, we will provide additional communication through the same channels you are receiving this message.
Please be mindful of your neighbors who may need assistance.
Best regards,
Alan Piombo
