Public Safety Announcement
Danger Warning - New Heavy Calving at Valdez Glacier, Unstable Ice in Lake
For immediate release: 08.17.2020, 1:00 p.m.
Valdez Glacier experienced additional calving and separation over the past 24 hours.
A significant amount of unstable ice exists in the lake. Debris from the previous event vacated the face and drifted into the main body of the lake. Floating ice is actively moving. Open water past the launch area may unexpectedly become congested with new debris and trap boaters. Rolling icebergs and underwater calving pose serious danger.
For your safety, keep away from all floating ice and the face of the glacier. Observe and follow posted danger signs.
