Current Initiatives and Updates

  • Face Cover On Manhattan Beach – We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has been wearing a face covering. And while we look forward to a time when we don't have to wear them—we're not there yet. Please enjoy viewing the City's “Face Cover On” Manhattan Beach video!
  • Update on 2020 Hometown Fair – With health and safety as the priority, the Hometown Fair scheduled for October 2020 was canceled by the Hometown Fair Board. However, the 2020 Hometown Fair is featuring a virtual Battle of the Bands. Amateur bands are invited to submit a video audition by September 1; preference will be given to groups from South Bay middle schools and high schools. A public vote will determine the winner. The winner will be announced during the fair weekend and awarded the Grand Prize of a headline performance at the 2021 Hometown Fair. The Battle of the Bands Audition Application is available online. Visit mbfair.org for more information.

The change reflects daily increases, not increases from the prior situation report. The number of new cases in L.A. County is missing lab reports from one of the larger labs, which is contributing to the lower number of new cases. L.A. County still anticipates receiving backlog cases from the State electronic lab report (ELR).

Federal, State, and County Updates

  • Projections in Healthcare / Predictive Modeling – Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) released an updated COVID-19 Projections of Hospital-based Health Care Demand through August 12. Key findings include:
    • The COVID-19 epidemic in Los Angeles County is affecting a younger population, on average, than before;
    • The number of new COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization each day across Los Angeles County now appears to be decreasing. The number of daily new cases is similar to the lower numbers seen in May;
    • As DHS had gained greater experience in treating patients hospitalized with COVID-19, they have learned that a greater share can be effectively cared for without placing them in the ICU or using mechanical ventilation;
    • Because of these changes, there has been a decrease in the need for ICU beds and ventilators relative to the number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19; and
    • The model suggests that about 1 in 725 (between 1 in 1200 and 1 in 435) in Los Angeles County residents are currently infected, and infectious to others and that about 1 in 8 have had COVID-19; last week, this estimate was 1 in 510. Visit lacounty.gov for more information.
  • DMV Offices Close at 3:00 PM- Per the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), all DMV offices will close statewide at 3:00 PM through Wednesday, August 19, to conserve energy and protect the health and safety of customers and employees from high heat impacts. Customers are encouraged to avoid an office visit by going online to take care of their DMV needs. Many services are available 24/7 at dmv.ca.gov/online.
  • Consumer Financial Relief Information and Advisories – The State of California is working to soften the financial impact of COVID-19 on residents who are struggling to pay their mortgage and bills. At Governor Newsom's request, national and nearly 200 state-chartered banks, credit unions, and mortgage lenders and servicers have committed to providing relief for consumers and homeowners in California. The California Department of Business Oversight (DBO) provides guidance to help keep consumers from losing their homes or suffering further financial hardship as a result of the pandemic. The DBO also encourages businesses and consumers to be extra vigilant of fraud, scams, and unlawful activities seeking to exploit the pandemic and associated financial uncertainties. View a list of financial institutions, key consumer advisories, and answers to questions on financial relief at dbo.ca.gov.
  • Travelers Prohibited from Entry to the United States - Based on several Presidential proclamations, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated their webpage on Travelers Prohibited from Entry to the United States to help slow the spread of COVID-19. With specific exceptions, foreign nationals who have been in any of the following countries during the past 14 days may not enter the United States: China, Iran, European Schengen area, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and Brazil. U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, certain family members, and other individuals who meet specified exceptions, who have been in one of the countries in the past 14 days, will be allowed to enter the United States through select airports, including Los Angeles International Airport. Check out the updated world map of Travel Recommendations by Destination webpage based on Risk Assessment for COVID-19 Transmission. For what to do after arriving in the United States, view the CDC's webpage After You Travel or cdc.gov for more travel information. Note, as of August 8, Customs and Border Protection has referred 556,637 travelers at the select airports for enhanced health screenings.
  • Healthy People 2030 - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released Healthy People 2030, the nation's 10-year plan for addressing our most critical public health priorities and challenges. Since 1980, HHS's Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion has set measurable objectives and targets to improve the health and well-being of the nation. This decade, Healthy People 2030 features 355 core objectives with new objectives related to opioid use disorder, youth e-cigarette use, and resources for adapting Healthy People 2030 to emerging public health threats like COVID-19. Visit hhs.gov for more information.
  • L.A. County Daily Briefing Statistics on COVID-19L.A. County Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed 64 new deaths and 1,003 new cases of COVID-19 in today's daily report. The number of new cases reported today is missing lab reports from one of the larger labs which is contributing to the lower number of new cases. DPH still anticipates receiving backlog cases from the State electronic lab report (ELR). Data sources that track other key indicators, including hospitalizations and deaths, are not affected by the reporting issue. Given the past ELR delays, DPH urges any person with a positive lab result to call (833) 540-0473 to connect with a Public Health Specialist who can provide information about services and support. To date, Public Health has identified 224,031 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County, and a total of 5,335 deaths; ninety-two percent of people who died had underlying health conditions. Testing results are available for more than 2,103,000 individuals, with 10% of all people testing positive. Currently, there are 1,352 confirmed cases currently hospitalized, and 32% are confirmed cases in the ICU. In the last month, daily hospitalizations have decreased by 37%, from 2,219 in mid-July to 1,388 in mid-August. There are 1,352 confirmed cases currently hospitalized, and 32% of these people are confirmed cases in the ICU. The decreasing number of daily hospitalizations is one of the best indicators that our efforts over the last few weeks are working, as it is an accurate representation of how many people are currently seriously ill from the virus.
