Wildfire Information - Be Engaged & Prepared

Our community is currently facing a heatwave, power outages, wildfires, unhealthy air conditions, and a pandemic. We understand there is a lot on your mind, and anxiety is more than expected; right now, it is imperative to stay informed, alert, and prepared.

Wildfires move quickly, and winds can spread sparks; it is crucial if conditions change to follow the appropriate channels. Residents should:

  • Register for emergency alerts at www.alertscc.org;
  • Follow @calfireSCU, @CAL_FIRE, and @sccfiredept (on Twitter) for wildfire updates;
  • And always be prepared for a possible evacuation.
Keep phones charged, gas tanks full/charged, and emergency kits packed, in the event of an evacuation. If you do not have an emergency kit, we urge you to make one; for a list of emergency kit items, please visit www.losaltosca.gov/emergencykits.

Your family may not be together when a disaster strikes, so it is essential to establish a communication plan. This will help in answering questions like:
  • How will I get in touch with loved ones if cell phones, internet and/or landlines aren't working?
  • Where should my family meet after an emergency?
  • How will my family/household get to our safe meeting place?
To start your communication plan, visit www.losaltosca.gov/communicationplan.

While the current air quality in Los Altos is moderate, this can change in minutes due to a wildfire. If smoke is present, please: stay indoors, keep windows closed, set air conditioning units and car vent systems to re-circulate, and avoid smoking, frying food, burning candles, and vacuuming. Please check on your neighbors and loved ones, especially if they are elderly or have breathing difficulties. To check the air quality in your area, visit www.airnow.gov.

The county has established a dedicated web page in response to the wildfires, which includes community information, updates, and resources: https://bit.ly/LightningComplex-SCC.

Included are several tips to ensure your family is prepared for a wildfire.
