IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 / CORONAVIRUS Friday, August 21, 2020
BURR RIDGE IN WEST SUBURBAN REGION 8 – “MASK FOR US”
The total case count now is 204, up two from Wednesday. The 14-day active case count is 24, down from 27 on Wednesday. The number of active cases in the Village has stabilized this week; it is my
hope that any significant increases are behind us and that a steady downward trend begins again next week. There were slightly over 4,000 new cases reported statewide Thursday and Friday with 51
new deaths. These remain sobering numbers. Positivity rates are 3.5% and 4.3% statewide over the past two days. In other good news, Kane County (in Region 8 with DuPage) was removed from the State’s county watch list. Kane’s number of new cases significantly decreased this week, and thus returned to compliance with the Governor’s metrics for outbreak containment. Please continue to be
vigilant in your public encounters, as the virus is clearly still among us.
This week, the FDA approved a saliva test for COVID-19, developed at the University of Illinois, which can be turned around in 24 hours. The Governor called it a “game changer” for more rapid and widespread testing, while also making testing safer as it requires little to no PPE for test takers to be safe while performing their duties. The University has said that they would be prioritizing its sales to Illinois agencies, meaning that we can expect more and better testing to be available
in the coming weeks and months. Congratulations to all involved in creating this terrific innovation!
Our Burr Ridge United Church of Christ (BRUCC) was featured in the Chicago Tribune this week, as they hosted a food bank for needy families in our area. BRUCC has consistently reached out to the
Village to see how they could be of service to its community since well before the pandemic began, and I wish to commend their servants’ hearts in filling critical needs and engaging with the community in a time where disengagement is more often heard. I thank BRUCC for their generosity of time and spirit to the community! If you are a Burr Ridge resident and need masks, please call the Village Hall (630-654-8181). They are freely available for any resident. We have
given over 2,000 masks away to residents since July 1 and will continue to provide this service as a courtesy to our great residents. It’s not too early to plan for your annual flu shot. It’s more important than ever.
Maybe I can offer some inspiration to wear a mask or face covering. Janet and I were on Nantucket this week (we met there working at the same bar in the ‘70s and return almost every year). Everyone – I mean the very young, the young and the not so young anymore –wore a mask, gaiter, or face covering of some kind.
Finally, as the pandemic appears to wane in terms of severity, I will be limiting my Mayor Message to Friday’s starting next week. Should urgent news occur, a Message would be sent as soon as possible. I hope we are truly seeing the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.
