Mayor’s Message of August 21, 2020

This is West Caldwell Mayor Joe Tempesta with a public service announcement.

Please be advised the West Caldwell Health Department has informed us as of today Friday August 21 we currently have 1 new confirmed caseof Covid-19 in West Caldwell’s general populationsince last week. This individual is homequarantined. Since the beginning of the Pandemicwe have had a total of 126 cases, and we have had 6 citizens pass away in our general population.

Thankfully we have had 119 cases closed whereby those citizens are recovered and are no longer quarantined. We are also thankful the community is being diligent in social distancing and the wearing of masks particularly when you cant’s social distance. We encourage all of you to continue thispractice for the foreseeable future. We also want to remind parents particularly parents with young student adults at home, please make sure they social distance and wear a mask whenever possible. Local house parties tend to be an incubator for the Covid-19 virus and we are simply trying to remind all of you to be careful.

In our two skilled nursing facilities combined we have had no additional Covid cases since last week and in Crane’s Mill we have 1 current case in the skilled nursing and sub-acute division. In the Hackensack Meridian Health WC Care Center, remains 1 current case of Covid-19. Tragically though since the beginning of the Pandemic we have had 44 deaths in those facilities.

I also ask that you continue to join me in thanking all our first responders and teachers. I also thank you for continuing to patronize our restaurants and retail stores.

Also, the political season is upon us. With the upcoming elections all of us have a right to express our opinions about their favorite candidates. Some of you have signs on your property which we are all allowed to do courtesy of the Supreme Court of the United States and 1st amendment rights including freedom of speech. However some residents have reported stolen signs and we remind the public if someone is caught stealing signs it has the potential for a criminal offense and certainly theft of moveable property. Let’s just respect each other’s opinions.
