Be Aware Be Safe. A Message to Children, Teenagers and Adults

Be Aware Be Safe.

A Message to Children, Teenagers and Adults

Our daily lives consist of going to work, school, running errands and other locations throughout our community. As you’re going through your daily routine it can be easy to overlook suspicious activity around you. Make it a point to always be aware of your surroundings!

If you see something that doesn’t quite fit, what should you do? What does this mean? If you see something that is outside of the ordinary and even seems suspicious, SAY SOMETHING! By being alert and reporting suspicious activity to your local law enforcement, you help to protect not only yourself but everyone within your community. The Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station is here to help.

According to the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Missing Person File, as of May 2020, there are 87,438 active missing persons reported. Juveniles under the age of 18 account for 30,618 (35%) of the missing persons reported.

Safety Tips to be Aware of:

 Be aware of your surroundings and if you see something suspicious call it in right away.
 Use the buddy system when out in public and avoid walking alone.
 Trust your instincts, if you feel someone is following you, stay away from isolated areas and plot an escape route.
 Always carry your cell phone to contact law enforcement immediately. Dial 911.
 If someone approaches you, keep them further than arm’s reach to escape.
 Avoid speaking with strangers.
 Don’t get into a vehicle with a stranger.
 Be cautious if someone asks for your assistance, it may be a rouse to get you to a secluded location.
 If a stranger grabs you, do everything possible to free yourself and run to safety. This includes dropping to the ground, hitting, kicking, biting, and screaming. Try to attract attention to yourself to allow others to help you.

Reporting Suspicious Activity:

When contacting law enforcement use the five “W” words.

 “Who” did you see. Describe the person including any features that stood out to you.
 “What” did you see. What actions did the suspect do (approach you, ask give you a ride)?
 “When” you saw it. What time of the day, how many minutes ago it may have happened?
 “Where” it occurred. Where did the suspicious activity occur?
 “Why” it’s suspicious. Why do you feel the suspicious person could be doing something wrong?

Staying aware of your surroundings and taking the appropriate actions when you see suspicious activity will protect you and the community.
