West Covina Police Working to Keep Public Safe From Suspected Impaired Drivers
Date of Release: 8/20/2020
West Covina, Calif. – While many of us have been staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the West Covina Police Department is reminding everyone who does need to drive to do so while sober. To protect you and your family, West Covina Police Department will have additional officers on patrol in August and September, looking for suspected impaired drivers. The increased efforts to address impaired driving are part of a national enforcement campaign, Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over.
In addition to patrols, West Covina PD will hold a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, August 28, 2020 from 6 PM to 2 AM at an undisclosed location in the city of West Covina. DUI/DL Checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing.
While less people are traveling, impaired driving continues to be a problem. During the 4th of July holiday, the CHP made 738 arrests for DUI over a 54-hour period. Driving while impaired is illegal, whether it is alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications or marijuana. If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a “may cause drowsiness” or other driving warning label, plan on staying home. If you see someone driving impaired, call 9-1-1.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
