Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Deputies Save Man's Life With Narcan

On Friday, August 28, 2020, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies were dispatched around 2:30 a.m. to a wash area near Camp Plenty Road and Soledad Canyon Road, Canyon Country, regarding a possible overdose. The caller relayed to a 9-1-1 dispatcher that a male adult had possible overdosed on pills. Upon arrival to the scene, the deputies located the male adult. The informant (caller) was found performing chest compressions. Deputies found the male adult to be unconscious, and not breathing.

One of the deputies immediately administered department issued Narcan to the male adult, and took over performing chest compressions, but the man did not respond. Another deputy administered a second dose of Narcan, after which the male adult started breathing again, and regaining consciousness. In between the doses of Narcan, a total of four deputies performed chest compressions to save the man’s life.

The revived person was transported to the hospital by ambulance to the hospital for medical treatment.

“We have been having regular discussions during briefings with our patrol personnel on recognizing the signs of a drug overdose, and the importance of administering Narcan,” said Captain Justin Diez of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “At times, deputies are the first ones on scene at overdose calls, and by their quick actions, they can help individuals suffering from an opioid overdose get a second chance at life.”

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s J-Team has reported concerns of an increase in overdoses that they suspect is related to fentanyl. Fentanyl is an opioid that is 100 times more powerful than morphine. Fentanyl is increasingly being found in the majority of street drugs, and used to make tablets appear to be prescription drugs. Many overdoses are occurring because people were not aware that what they were consuming was contaminated with fentanyl.

The J-Team works to break the cycle of drug abuse through intervention, education and enforcement. The team may be reached by email at [email protected].
