BURR RIDGE IN WEST SUBURBAN REGION 8 – “MASK FOR US”
The total case count in Burr Ridge now is 207. The 14-day active case count for the Village overall is just 16, down from 24 a week ago as well as from the Village’s peak of 37 on August 5. Burr Ridge appears to have weathered the spikes observed in July and early August. To keep that trend, I sent a letter Wednesday to every bar and food service establishment in the Village informing and reinforcing the Governor’s latest mandate that servers, hosts, clearers must be masked when interacting with patrons. As a patron, you too should put your mask to your nose and mouth when interacting with staff. So far, the local count is trending downward, but that is cautious optimism on my part. That our Burr Ridge cases are trending downwards is not a signal to leave your mask off or wear it around your chin, as I have seen people do, or to feel otherwise complacent. Please continue to exercise rigorous care and discipline when interacting in public, as it is high time we put COVID-19 on its back for good.
Conversely, positive cases remain daily in the thousands, and deaths-any deaths-are too high around the state. These are facts applicable to Cook and DuPage counties, and our regional partner Kane County. Cook County was added to the state warning list of counties with excessive amounts of cases per 100K as well as an increasing number of deaths over the past week. During the weekly mayor’s call, senior officials at the DuPage Board of Health were pessimistic that we are past the worst of it. Statewide testing remains in the 40-50,000 range daily and more than 3 million Illinoisans – roughly about a quarter of the state has been tested. If there is good news, it is that hospitalizations state wide for COVID-19 remain stable, ICU beds, and ventilator needs are sufficient and there are plans for cooperative sharing of hospital services among contiguous regions. More good news in testing innovation has also been released this week, as Abbott Labs received FDA approval for a $5 COVID-19 test that produces results in 15 minutes, all without lab equipment. Abbott says the technology used to create the test looks and functions much the way that pregnancy tests function. FDA testing showed 98% accuracy for this type of test.
My next message will come in September signaling that COVID-19 is affecting yet another season of our lives. Autumn signals the normal flu season – get your flu shot as soon as you can. While COVID-19 cannot be prevented with a seasonal flu shot, no one need risk getting both. If you are over 60 and or have underlying health issues such as asthma, diabetes, obesity or similar immune compromising issues, consider them before socializing – and wear a mask, keep your distance and wash your hands (and those wrists and knuckles) thoroughly when you get home.
Finally, with both conventions over, it is time to learn, ask, read, consider, and decide whom to vote for in the November election. This election includes not only a heated presidential contest, but also contests for Congress, state assembly, county board, county officers, judges, and other local officials. Your vote counts!
