Crime Alert Bulletin for the week of August 24-30, 2020

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 08-24-20 at 12:37 a.m., Officer Jackson-Berrios was on the 6600 block of Mission Street and saw a subject hunched over by the trash cans behind a bus shelter. Officer Jackson-Berrios noticed the subject appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance, and she subsequently cited the subject, a 30-year old San Francisco resident, for possession of a controlled substance (crystal methamphetamine and Fentanyl) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Tuesday, 08-25-20 at 2:26 p.m., Officer McCarthy was on patrol near Southgate Avenue and Mayfield Avenue and saw a subject slumped over in a dark colored Acura. Officer McCarthy contacted the driver and asked if he was okay. The driver told the officer he was just looking for something underneath his seat. Officer McCarthy saw, in plain view, a glass smoking pipe usually used to ingest controlled substances. Officer McCarthy’s K-9 partner assisted in checking the vehicle and alerted to a backpack that contained a digital scale, a large amount of zip lock baggies, straws, and suspected methamphetamine. Officer McCarthy arrested the subject, a 30-year old Daly City resident, for being in possession of a controlled substance for sale and for possession of unlawful paraphernalia.

On Wednesday, 08-26-20 at 12:03 a.m., Officer Moody stopped two subjects on their bicycles on the 6000 block of Mission Street. Both of the bicycles were unequipped with lighting. Subsequent to this stop, Officer Moody cited a 36-year old transient male for possession of stolen property (the bicycle was stolen in Berkeley), possession of methamphetamine, and possession of a glass pipe. Officer Moody arrested the 45-year old transient female for providing a false name and disobeying lawful commands.

On Wednesday, 08-26-20 at 11:59 p.m., subsequent to a check of a suspicious vehicle in the Thornton Beach parking lot, Officer Wagnon arrested a 34-year old South San Francisco resident for possession of a substantial quantity of narcotics and a loaded .45 caliber 1911 handgun with an obliterated serial number. The subject was a convicted felon and had additional warrants for his arrest. Officer Wagnon also charged the subject for being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition.

On Thursday, 08-27-10 at 12:25 p.m., Officer Tualaulelei was on patrol on Sullivan Avenue and 91st Street and saw a vehicle that was partially stopped in the intersection, causing other vehicles to drive around it to get through the intersection. The vehicle was also stopped in the red zone leading to the parking lot of the police department. Officer Tualaulelei approached the driver of the vehicle, and the driver immediately removed the key and handed it to the officer, stating the vehicle was stolen. Officer Gregorio arrived to assist and contacted the registered owner who said the driver did not have permission to be driving his vehicle. Officer Tualaulelei arrested the subject, a 31-year old Daly City resident, for vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of a vehicle master key.

On Friday, 08-28-20 at 10:50 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Home Depot store on a report of a male subject using heroin inside the restroom. The Loss Prevention Officer said he followed the subject into the restroom and saw the subject drop glass pipes onto the floor. Officer Kett and Officer Chittenden initially contacted the subject. Officer Angeles noticed the subject appeared to be under the influence of something as he was having trouble standing, talking, and answering questions. The subject, a 21-year old Fairfield resident, was on probation and was subject to search and seizure. Officer Angeles searched the subject and found a usable quantity of heroin, as well as glass pipes commonly used to smoked controlled substances. Officer Angeles issued the subject a citation for being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Friday, 08-28-20 at 3:30 p.m., a 28-year old San Francisco resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after he was involved in a solo vehicle rollover near the intersection of Westridge Avenue and Skyline Boulevard. The subject was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

On Saturday, 08-29-20 at 10:40 a.m., Officer Serbin and Officer Angeles were dispatched to the lobby of the Police Department to talk to a victim who wanted to make a report of an assault. The 81-year old victim said that earlier in the week (on Monday), he was taking out his trash and saw a white Toyota parked on the side of his house on the 100 block of Rio Verde Street. The victim said he walked up to the vehicle and told the driver that he could not park on his property. The victim said as he was heading back to his house, the subject exited his vehicle and punched him once with a closed fist on his face. The victim said he was knocked to the ground, and the subject began to kick both sides of his rib cage and inner thighs. The victim said the subject then began to repeatedly stomp on his head while he was still on the ground. The victim remembered hearing his daughter screaming at the subject to stop, and the subject fled the scene. The victim said he did not report the incident because he was embarrassed of how badly he looked and also was afraid of retaliation. The victim’s daughter described the suspect as a black male, 30-40 years old, 6’0 tall, stocky build, with an Afro hair style and was last seen wearing a burgundy sweater and beige pants. This investigation is continuing.

On Sunday, 08-30-20 at 10:21 p.m., a 32-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after she collided into a parked vehicle on the 200 block of Mariposa Avenue.

Scams/Other

Computer scam

A 72-year old Daly City resident/victim said on Tuesday, 08-23-20, he received a call from someone who identified himself as a Microsoft worker who said his home computer had been compromised. The victim said he did not need any assistance and hung up the phone. Approximately 10 minutes later, the subject called back and said all of his accounts were compromised, and he was there to help him. The victim said the caller prompted him to do a series of functions on his keyboard in order to allow him access. The caller told the victim not to touch his computer for a few hours so he could “work” on it. A few hours later, the caller requested to be paid for his work. The caller told the victim to obtain a Target gift card. Once the caller received the gift card, he told the victim he needed an additional $500. The victim lost $1,000 before he realized he was scammed.

Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there.
