County Health Officer Order Revises Restrictions on Salons, Barbershops, and Schools - Press Release:

County Health Officer Order Revises

Restrictions on Salons, Barbershops, and Schools

Manhattan Beach, CA (September 4, 2020) - Following the easing of restrictions by the State of California and a decline in new coronavirus cases, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has revised its Health Officer Order to allow for limited, on-campus operation for schools in L.A. County, as well as limited in-door operations of hair salons and barbershops.

Effective immediately, hair salons and barbershops may reopen for indoor operations at 25% of the salon or shop’s maximum occupancy and with required modifications. As permitted by the State and County, operations are encouraged to continue providing as many services as possible outdoors. Salons and barbershops may continue to apply for temporary permits to operate outdoors. To apply, visit the City’s website, www.citymb.info, and click on the “Online Permitting” button.

Beginning September 14, 2020, K-12 schools may offer in-school services for a small, stable cohort of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or English Learners (ELs) needing assessments and specialized in-school services, with priority given to students with disabilities. Schools must limit the number of students allowed at any one time on campus for essential assessments and specialized in-school services to 10% or less of the total student body.

“This is a positive step in the right direction but it is important to note that it was only possible with our collective efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19. If we continue to take steps to curb the spread, further business re-openings will be allowed by the State and County,” said Mayor Richard Montgomery. “As we approach this Labor Day weekend, we must utilize the tools that we have and adhere to physical distancing and infection control requirements that reduce the risk of transmission, including the continued use of face coverings.”

The first day of school at the Manhattan Beach Unified School District (MBUSD) was Wednesday, August 26, 2020. Currently, MBUSD offers distance learning opportunities exclusively. Based on county and state orders, all TK-12 schools in Los Angeles County must operate in distance learning mode. MBUSD plans to open child care programs for students from age 2 through 5th grade on September 16, 2020. The County announced this week that limited in-school services will be allowed in Los Angeles County beginning on September 14, 2020. The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board will be discussing that development in upcoming board meetings.

It is the community’s shared responsibility to slow the spread of COVID-19. By adhering to social distancing, wearing face coverings, hand washing, and avoiding crowds, confined spaces, and close contact, we can collectively prevent future surges in coronavirus cases.
